Newspaper Ads for Adoption?

Just a curiosity question - I see ads all the time in our local papers that read something like, "Married couple seeking to adopt a newborn. Call Joe and Jennifer at ____." Do those ads actually work? I've never personally known anyone who adopted that way, have you?

Yeah I have always found this method a bit odd and strange. They must work sometimes because that’s how my Aunt and her husband were hooked up with their son’s biological mother they placed an ad in papers. Their adoption attorney is the one that helped them to set up their ads; they even placed in more then one state. I think the number that was listed went to the attorney.

I've never personally known of a case where this has worked for someone and I have to agree with other posters that it does come across as creepy and unethical.

I can not begin to imagine what would go though someone's mind - ESPECIALLY a child's - when told, "Yes, honey, we got you from a newspaper/Craigslist ad...because we LOVE you!" Yikes!

Those ads are illegal in my state, but I remember seeing them in previous locales.

I've never known anyone to adopt that way, however I have heard of adoption agencies telling PAPs to network on their own as well, and if they get any interest to put the expectant mom in touch with the agency. Perhaps those ads are an attempt at this suggested "networking"..

It worked in Juno... So in fiction it does, in reality I have no clue. I think the idea is tacky and makes me question the people running the ad. Are they unable to work with an agency, have they been turned down in the past, can they not afford adoption, are they trying to get past the already shady ethics of adoption, are they trying to "fast track"?

They raise some very serious questions in my mind.

Though I am totally repulsed by this, I have a family member that successfully adopted this way. Their adopted child is now a freshman in college.

The number listed in the ad they used was not their personal number. It was a private attorneys 800 number manned by an answering service that did not indicate that they were answering for an attorney. They would take a message, then the attorney would return the call on "behalf" of the PAP's and swoop in for the kill. Basically, it was a hot-line to broker babies, and the same number was used in many other ads from PAP's.

I do not know if this is a regular occurrence or an isolated local incident.

I've never known it to work for anyone, but then again I don't know many people who have adopted domestically. To tell you the truth, those ads always make me kind of nauseous. There is just something really creepy about begging for someone else's baby in the newspaper. Ugh.

That is a great question, I wonder the same thing. I have also seen ads on craigslist and things like that. I thought that type of advertising was illegal. I am not sure if anyone has actually experienced it to work. Good question!
