? Non Mom Moms?
|
So I was just e-mailed about a contest NBC is having for moms and was wondering what other people think of them describing adoptive moms as non mom moms.
It defines a "non mom mom" as "Grandparent, stepmom, or mom to adopted children, each one raising and loving a child. A priceless gift for everybody."
In checking out their web site I was not impressed with the little blurbs they wrote under the adoptive moms. Mostly the refrence to one persons children as "meth babies"

Yes, this has been all the fuss on the adoption boards today. Okay, so you want to honor someone and call them a non (the thing you're honoring). It's just stupid, and of course insulting and ignorant. They have gotten so many emails and calls, the category has now been changed on their website to Adoptive Moms. |

That is rather hurtful. Kinda like how I feel about being called a barf err... birthmother.
A mom is a mom is a mom. If you have parented a child in any way you are a mom. |

Well I am an adoptee and I feel hurt by that. My Mother who adopted me was definitely a Mum.
I think thats awful |

I think that is hurtful and crap.
A mom to adopted children is every bit as much a mother as I am to my children.
I'm sorry they said that. If gestating and giving birth alone makes a mother, than the years of caring, nuturing and loving make one too! |

How hurtful to everybody involved, adoptees, natural and adoptive parents. Surely all parents involved are parents, and as an adoptee I certainly feel that I was raised by my Mom! |

Ick - that's awful. I'm glad they're backtracking on that one.
A Mom is a Mom is a Mom, they take many forms but they're all Moms at the end of the day. None of them are 'non Moms' ick ick ick |

It still irritates me. Why are adoptive mothers in a separate category from 'regular' moms? What a freakin' joke. I 'only' adopted my kid, so he's not as important as a CHILD OF MY OWN would be. Gack! I HATE crap like this. Man, I'm so irritated right now! And did anyone read about the woman in Haiti whose children "owe their lives" to her? Um, excuse me? I know what they're trying to say, but then why didn't they just say it? She saved their lives. They don't OWE her anything. |

I was adopted and never consider anyone other than my adoptive mom my mother, and non mom mom.. what the heck... lol.. I don't like that term.. it just doesn't even make sense in the English language...
~Maybe a non mom mom is a mother that has a child and just doesn't take care of it or something like that... who knows~ |

I will give them credit for their quick "damage Control". Here is what they have on their website...
"Teleflora is immediately changing the name of our "Non-Mom" category to "Adopting Moms". After closer examination, we can see how this may have been offensive to moms who have adopted children -- moms who are indeed real moms to their children in every sense of the word. In fact, many of us at Teleflora are “adopting” parents ourselves, including our president and owner. The essence of this category still focuses on a grandparent, neighbor, step mom, or mom to adopted or foster children, each one raising and loving a child.
This show of insensitivity on our part was in no way intended and we deeply apologize for any concern or distress we may have caused. It was always our intent to salute and celebrate all moms. "
Probably some young kid (intern) that thought it was a cute new name for us that are not quite "real" mom's.
I also thought the meth babies comment was pretty ignorant... How can people be so damn stupid. When these "meth babies" grow up, someone can explain to them why no one objected to the being called that. What Mother would allow someone to call her babies meths babies? |
