As far as I understand it, the point of November being designated that way was to attempt to find adoptive homes for foster children. The point of National Adoption Month was originally to increase awareness of the children who wait in foster care for adoptive families.
I'm not saying that no other kind of adoption can have any validity-- it definitely can-- but when it comes to celebrating Adoption Month, I prefer the original purpose to be observed. Foster kids need homes, and they take the back seat too often in every other area of life. I think this needs to be all about them, without them getting shoved to the background in favour of newborns and infants.
This awareness month should be about putting foster kids FIRST for once. |

Yes because it brings awareness to the need for adoptive parents who will adopt children from the foster care system.
The folks who adopt foster children need all of the encouragement they can get and to celebrate in this manner does just that.
EDIT:
Why the thumb?? I guess foster kids should remain foster kids til they age out and then that will be another travesty to write about. Without foster parents and adoptive resource parents, children will age out and though it is sad these kids lost their natural families...let us not forget the reason these kids come into custody. The families I have seen at these celebrations are not the ones who have managed to adopt an infant...they are the families who have adopted teens, sibling groups, special needs children, sometimes children who will forever be dependant upon their a/parents, often times because mom couldn't stay off the drugs when she was pregnant or one or both parents meeted out some serious, physically, impairing abuse.
So, let's weep for the families who were lost....but remember without the people who will adopt and want to make families for these children....these children really lose. These children need recognition. The children who will come up behind them will need it too. Child abuse is not going to go away, been around forever.
I see nothing wrong with National Adoption Day because I know why it came it to be.....
Thumbs anyone?? |

Mom to Foster Children
 |
I believe if and only if the adoption is for a good reason - foster care. My nephew was adopted on National Adoption Day 7 years ago and November is his favorite month ever since because he says it was the month I finally got a forever family! |

I think there needs to be more awareness and interest for "good" families to get involved in foster care and adoption. There are surely a lot of families that do foster care that shouldn't be. And a lot of great people afraid to do it. |
