Even after hearing or reading the book "The Girls Who Went Away", how many users honestly, truly believe that the Baby Scoop Era never happened?
I know there are many users here who say they acknowledge it happened even though it *seems* too horrific to have been such a plausible event.
So who truly believes it did not happen and why?

I'm not a disbeliever.
I actually just picked it up and have only read a quarter of it and find it revolting that this happened. I don't know how it got covered up so well. There's too many people who can share their stories to not believe it. |

That is my "bathroom book". Many who visit get stuck in there just to read the next testimony.
I have no doubt that is happened and that some of the things we read in that book STILL happen today.
2 months ago, i overheard friends from church discussing their nephew's girlfriend. The girl was "sent" to a "home" where she was pending the birth of her baby and was "choosing adoption" for her baby. They said that the home was so great because they kept her from contacting people who may be a negative influence and encourage her to parent (well they said chang her mind, but I know what they meant).
I opened my big mouth and said how horrible that was and asked if the mother was unable to care for her kids and why her nephew was not taking responsibility. Anyway, if it can happen today, then I have no doubt it was common before the age of the internet and information. |

Of course I know it happened - I was there.
But I will be most interested to see who answers your question the way you asked it? I'd also like to hear how/why some people refuse to believe it happened. |

oh i believe it happened, and i think it still does, on a lesser, or more quiet, scale. my friend from church is a prime example. Got pregnant at 16, forced to give her child up(this was 7 years ago). then, she was in a stable, healthy relationship(2 years later) and when her dad found out she was pregnant again, sent her to "college" early. She wasnt even allowed back for her mothers funeral. When she came back, the following summer,no baby. And these were supposed to be Christian people. |

I cant wait to see the responses. If they choose NOT to believe, it's because it doesn't fit with what they have told their children, or what adoptees have been told by their parents. (meaning it's easier to just say yo mama was a crack ho and didnt want to keep you) |

Ask my mother whether it happened.
Oh, sorry, you can't. She doesn't want to talk about it. 44 years later she still feels ashamed of having gotten pregnant out of wedlock and being shipped across state lines to live in a maternity home for months so nobody would know. That whole not knowing whether her child was dead or alive for over 30 years bothered her some too.
So yeah, I believe. |
