I was told that once all my paperwork is in, and I am approved to adopt, that at that point, I could get placed with a child the day my paperwork is complete.

For kids 8 and under:
infant-6 months, crib, with new mattress, crib sheets, sleepers-get a crib that converts into toddler bed, that way, you'll be prepared for any child up to age 4 with a bed.
6 months to year: very simple toys, sold in the infant department
year to 2 years, still mostly simple toys, a little more complex. toy car is great, scoot along roller toy, nothing with sharp corners
2 years to 3 a little more complex toys, age appropriate. By going into your toy department, as well as the nursery, you'll see some nice toys, which are age appropriate. Try to get gender neutral. The same goes as they get older, except older boys will want cars, trucks, and bulldozers, and girls will want dolls, and girly things.
Try to get some things that encourage exercise, as well as it will wear them down, something you'll be glad to do after your first few days.

An absolute must, with any child, is a baby monitor, so that way, you can hear what's going on, if they're scared, frightened, try to run away, or anything. Also, for the older kids, some coloring books, and kids of all ages love to be read to, so some simple books that they can help with words. Traditional books that you read when you were a kid is most likely stories that they'll love to hear again.

Car seats usually come with kids, however, there are some great resources to obtain them, such as your insurance company, and police stations. Medical equipment-the Salvation Army will supply anything like wheelchairs free usually.

Always try to get a new, nice toy for your child. By having them help pick it out, it will build trust, and let them take it with them when they leave. A fenced in area, that's tight in your backyard, and "childproof" ways of getting out, is great, that way they can play outside everyday.
Good luck!

um i think we finished our licensing in either May or July we got a call for 2 sisters (age 4 and 6) that october (when i was 8 months pregnant!). they went home to their family the end of January and we were asked to take a boy (age 5) a few weeks later (we declined because our infant son was having medical issues at the time). Then in July we got a call for a 6 year old girl which we declined. And in September we got a call for a 3 year old girl who we were supposed to only have for a few days and then they called and asked if we wanted to keep her long term which we agreed to. We also recieved calls for several respite sibling groups since licensing which we often do respite sibling groups.

as for what to have on hand. we just take the kids shopping when they get here. they agency SHOULD provide carseat but they dont always.

With the 2 girls we had we met them on a Wed and they were placed with us on a Fri.

Our current placement they called at about 3:30 (when i was at the doctor discovering I was pregnant!) and dropped her off at about 5pm.

Brriske .
Just so that you know, I work for a placing/licensing agency. We have homes that sit for months at a time with no kids and then we have some that are always full. If you are able to get on the "good side" of the placing social worker you are more inclined to get placements. If you are solely in this for adoption purposes, you should probably realize that from the time a kid is placed to adoption you are looking at about a three year time span as long as nothing else interferes. Things that can interfere are extended families, long lost relatives, the parents, etc.

I think that you should always try to have an infant car carrier, booster carrier, and booster seat. Those are vital with kids under 8. It is also good to have a variety of sizes of diapers, wipes and formula on hand. At least a can of formula so that you do not have to go out to the local store at three am if they call with a placement.

Literally, 3.5 hours. We got word at 11 am that it was all done and by 2:30 pm that day we had a second call for the placement of a 4 day old. At the same time they dropped off the delegation paperwork they dropped around a Walmart voucher for us to go and get $300 worth of clothes, diapers, formula... that we needed. We already had the room set up so we were good to go there.

Since we were foster to adopt we adopted her by the time she was 5 months.

I had a hiccup with my paperwork (actually my district office did), but once the paperwork was approved I think it was about 5 hours before I received a call to take a child. Lol, there's so many children waiting, I doubt it will be long.

If possible, be prepared with the basics, bed, car seats, a few toys, etc. They should be able to provide you with specific needs (nappies, bottles, school uniform) when they drop off a specific child. Good luck!

My friend's family waited three years before getting two children at the same time. They had to go through countless house checks, as well as at-home visits and psych exams. They finally got the kids, though--Jackie and Lucas.

we had a placement before we had our license. they had to do a temporary emergency one. then we had two more shortly after them, and then another two after they left. the one we have now has been with us for seven months and should finialize hopefully before the end of the year.
