Original birth certificate question?

Original birth certificate question?

My mother was adopted and I was able to receive the orignal birth certificate. The section that states full name of child is Mildred May Perdue (Lennox). What I'm puzzled by is the parenthesis around Lennox.

The father's last name is Dawson and the mother's maiden name was Perdue

Lennox could be your grandmother's maiden name, or the name of the father.
Can you trace through her lineage in the town she was born in? Sometimes geneology records will disclose answers to questions we didn't know we had as well as the ones we are asking.

It is probably your biological mother's last name and she and your biological father were not married, thus the name in parenthesis.

Very possible her biological fathers surname was Lennox.

Could Lennox be the mother´s MARRIED name?

Father and husband aren´t necessarily the same thing!

Maybe lennox is a madien name or the name she was given before she was adopted. ask her the name maybe it may ring a bell to her.

Sounds to me that her birth mother's last name is (or was) likely Lennox. The courthouse would have the best answers for the meaning in that. Try calling them and ask for the records dept. if you don't get an automated option to reach there. They can look at it on file if needed and help with that.

That may have been the mothers name or the father's surname if they were not married. At certain times in our history and in certain regions, birth certs for "illegitimate" children were different than standard ones, so they may have used odd notations like that.

Could be that Lennox is the dad's name and that they weren't married.

Or, Perdue was the dad's name and Lennox was the mother's name.

I would guess that Lennox was her father's name if your mother was born to an unwed mother. Is the father's name on the birth certificate?

I was adopted at birth and my original birth cert states my adopted parents last name, the () might be her adopted last name.
