Parents who have children with RAD?

Would you mind explaining this? I know very little about the condition and would like to understand it better. What is the root cause? Can it be overcome?

Thanks for any answers you care to share on the topic.

Reactive Attachment Disorder

If that is what you mean.... My son has been with us for 4 months! We are adopting him. He is 3 yo and been with a foster family from 3 months old to 3 yo! He was taken out of his bio home due to negligence and drug abuse by his bio mom. His ex-foster mom said that even though he was only 3 months old it was so sad the way he would not pick his head up at all or even look at her when she talked to him. Only 3 mo! She said he didn't really open up to her till he was about 6 or 7 months! It is a condition found in children who have received grossly negligent care and who do not form a healthy emotional attachment with their primary caregivers. It can be onvercome with a lot of time and patience and love. The older the child is and the longer the child has been exposed to those conditions the harder and the longer it is for a child to fully recover and form healthy bonds to other human beings in general! I am very grateful my son was cared for by his foster mom, but he also still has some trust issues. Which is partly because he was taken from everything he knows to be adopted. His foster mom didn't want to adopt him because he was not "white enough." (her words). And partly (I suspect) he was psychologically abused by his foster family! Like he always says he looks like a monkey and that they used to say that! (he is hispanic). Maybe they didn't mean to do any damage but s*** they should have known better right? We just keep reassuring him of how loved and wanted he is and that we are not going any where! It will probably take time but we are ready for that! Hope I was able to help. I wasn't really going to answer this question but I see that nobody has!

My son has RAD and it can change your life. It is where a child has had a lack of emotional contact to someone and gets to a place in their mind where they no longer want to bother trying to attach to anyone. It goes in stages. At times he will be loving and nice. Other times you could tell him you love him and he will freeze up. In teenagers it can get very agressive. I would suggest researching the topic through groups out there. It is something that as a couple you need to see if you want to take that on. It can be a handful. Sadly it seems to run huge in foster care and IAs.
