My father was adopted at birth 42 years ago, i nor my father have any information on the adoption. All anyone knows is that he was adopted at birth in the state of illinois. He is currently in jail and probably be there for a while i want to find my real paternal family members (or at least last names) so that in the future i wont end up marrying my cousin or anything crazy honestly im not very interested in getting to know them (they gave away their son so im sure they wouldnt be interested in me) i just want to know who they are so i dont run into any problems. Can anyone tell me how to do this or where to start?

I'd strongly suggest joining The Registry group. They are at:

There are a number of Illinois people on there who could give you direction and advice.
Also, I'd recommend this book:
The Girls Who Went Away by Anne Fessler
You can get it at most libraries, and Amazon has it used for $2.50. I think it will show you a lot about what the atmosphere was like at the time your dad was born

YOU can not find any information on them. Your father will need to be the one to instigate the search. You may be able to go online and find the Illinois Adoption Reunino Registry. Email them and tell them your situation. They may charge a small fee IF they are able to find out any non-identifying information (what they look like, any medical problems, why he was given up). In order to find out the information you are wanting they will require a higher fee, a lot of paperwork will need to be filled out in as much detail as possible, your dad will need to write a letter to his birth family telling them about himself and why he wants contact (or why you want contact).
I know this because my husband was adopted. He is now 34 and in the process of finding his birth family. We know they still live in the same state, that his birth mother is alive and remarried, and that he has a younger 1/2 brother. :) |
