Please answer this!!! I need help!?

OK I am 24 yrs old I just found out my mom may be my grandma and my sister maybe my real birth mom. How do I find this out? my sister is dead, but she left behind two children. Can I have DNA test done from me & them to see if they are my bro & sister even though we would not have the same dad? Please explain to me how to find out with out letting my (mom) know I am trying to find out the truth. My nephew/brother will do DNA with me but will that do any good if we only had the same mom & not the same dad? Would the tesy still show he is my brother or nephew?
Additional Details
I am 24
My mom is 49
My sister would be 39 (if she were alive)
my nephew is 18
my niece is 15

Yes you can have a DNA test done to see if they are your siblings. You will need to have Mitochondrial DNA testing. This is DNA passed down from mother to child. I would suggest this type of testing to help solve your problem. A friend of mine used this type of testing. She found out that she was adopted and wanted to know if a gentleman she found online was her brother. Through Mitochondrial DNA testing they discovered that they had the same mother but not the same father.

A DNA test should work, but it is going to be expensive. You might be better off just asking your Mom.

The first thing I'd do is confront your mother/grandmother. What is her reaction like? Watch her body language carefully. Do you have any older relatives who would be sympathetic and most likely to tell you the truth?

Ask your mother/grandmother what hospital you were born in. How does she react to a question like that? If she gives you the name of a hospital, contact them about getting your medical records.

How about your sister/mother's high school? What school did she go to when she was 15? Do you have an old yearbook of hers? Maybe trying to reach out to some of her high school girlfriends at the time?

Get a copy of your birth certificate, if you don't already have one. You can order this online at:

http://www.vitalchek.com/

Once you have it, is there a gap between the date of birth and the date of issue that's larger than 1 or 2 days? That's not always a tell-tale sign, but it starts to raise flags. For example, all of the people in my adoptive family only have 1 or 2 day gaps between their date of birth and date of issue, but on my amended birth certificate the gap is 5 days. The gap on my adoptive sister's birth certificate is 3 weeks.

If you could edit your answer to let us know the state you were born in, you may get better advice and direction on how to answer this question. I think though you're going to want to do some searching and question asking on your own before you look into the expense of DNA testing.

No matter what the answer, you need, deserve and are entitled to know the truth about your origins and who your father is.

Good luck.

Edit: It took me some time to write this out, but then after I posted the answer I saw you had added ages of your family members. 10 year age difference - is that a typo?

just ask your mom, dont listen to candice, she is telling you to do something illegal (taking DNA from people and submitting them without consent to a DNA test.. not surprised at this though, she rather adopt outta the country that in her own city...)

I agree with other posters- best to talk to your mom about this first or even look at your birth certificate

if you don't feel comfortable about this you can have your nephew's DNA checked against yours to see if you are siblings or not but clearly something is going on in your family that needs to be talked about if you're thinking your mom may not really be your birthmother

There is a sibling test kit that you can request from DNA Diagnostics. This kit, when used by any two people, can confirm if they are siblings with one parent in common, siblings with both parents in common, or NOT siblings.

You will have the answer to your question. You will be able to learn if your 'nephew' is actually your brother -- even if you would have different fathers.

My experience (as an adoptee and a social worker) tells me that if you have reason to think this -- that your mom is actually your grandma -- then you are probably right. 'Regular' people don't go around thinking that their 'family' isn't quite what it claims to be...kwim?

I do think you should talk to your mom/grandma about it, but I'm with YOU on this one...I'd do the test first. Then you'll know the truth and you can TELL her you know the truth when you start the conversation.

One of the first things I'd want to know (if I were in your shoes) is, "Were you ever going to tell me? If so, when?"

Take care

I think the DNA test can tell you if you share a parent or if you are more distantly related.

I found this but I dont know if it is legit and wow is it expensive!

So if your ages are correct then your mother/grandmother would have been 10 when she gave birth to your sister/mom?

Home DNA test kits can be ordered through the mail or over the Internet at a cost averaging $100-$400 per test. They usually consist of a cheek swab or mouthwash to easily collect a sample of cells from the inside of your mouth. You send back the sample through the mail and within a month or two you receive the results - a series of numbers that represent key chemical "markers" within your DNA. These numbers can then be compared to results from other individuals to help you determine your ancestry.

mtDNA Tests - Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is contained in the cytoplasm of the cell, rather than the nucleus. This type of DNA is passed by a mother to both male and female offspring without any mixing, so your mtDNA is the same as your mother's mtDNA, which is the same as her mother's mtDNA. mtDNA changes very slowly so it cannot determine close relationships as well as it can determine general relatedness. If two people have an exact match in their mtDNA, then there is a very good chance they share a common maternal ancestor, but it is hard to determine if this is a recent ancestor or one who lived hundreds of years ago. It is important to keep in mind with this test that a male's mtDNA comes only from his mother and is not passed on to his offspring.

Yes... the test will still work. I'm not sure exactly what you need... what you need to do is call your Dr, and ask him how to go about this. I guess you'll have to go undercover and swab a cotton ball in everyone's mouth while they're sleeping!!! :) Good luck... and talk to a Dr. who can refer you to a lab that does this sort of thing. They'll help you the rest of the way.

your mom had your sister when she was only 10 years old?

Consult your physician to get accurate answers. I think this is way over the heads of people on yahoo answers and this is way too important to get wrong. Your family physician can help you and he can not pass this information on to anybody so you would be safe.

nick
give me the ages of everyone... your moms your sisters and your grandmas
