Can I obtain my adopted sisters records just to keep. About 9/10 yrs back she was adopted because of my mothers drug abuse causing her to have cerebral palsy. Actually all of us were adopted. There is 5 of us in total and 4 of us are in contact. There is only one of us who we can't see or contact because adoptive parents wanted that. Can I still obtain her birth certificate to keep?

You can most likely obtain her amended birth certificate. I live in California where birth certificates are public record. However, an adopted person's original birth certificate is not public record. In 6 states, adopted citizens can obtain their own birth certificates once they are adults. In the other 44, obtaining them requires the adopted person to meet certain requirements. In some states, like mine, that means getting a court order.
Do you know where your sister is so that you can resume contact when she is an adult? You can do that without a confidential intermediary (CI.) Some states have CI's that can help you locate your siblings separated by adoption, but if you already know her identity, you won't need that. |
