Question about adopting children?

Why do people adopt children from other countries? When there are so many AMERICAN children awaiting adoption?
We adopted our son in America. It just rubs me the wrong way when people adopt foreign, and then have articles written about their adoptions.

Actually the children in this country up for adoption are sick, starving, and in need of homes. I think people who can provide a safe, nurturing home for a child should share that with a child, even if the child is from another country. People sometimes don't realize that it is virtually **free** to adopt in the US. I know in Texas, attorney's fees are paid, along with many other benefits. Point is, if you can help a child, do it. |

How can you talk that way about a child...
Sure, every child deserves to be adopted. So what does it matter where they are from. Americans aren't anymore important than anyone else, whether they think so or not.
I'm not sure exactly how children are treated overseas but if it's worse than American children are treated, then maybe they should actually be a higher priority. |

Have you been to an orphanage in China or India or Russia or Africa? Have you been there? What I find when people like you ask this question is that it is based on ignorance. If you were to go to an orphanage in one of those countries, what you will find is beyond your ability to imagine. You will find hundreds upon hundreds of children. Most are dirty, most are hungry, most are crying, most are reaching out to you as you pass by their cribs. Then there are the ones who have given up on that....and they just sit or lie in the crib staring blankly at the ceiling. They no longer cry because no one ever came when they cried...they have given up. They sit and rock in silence or bang their heads on the crib railing or they just stare with blank eyes. Those are the ones who are "fortunate" enough to even be in an orphanage. Have you seen "Slumdog Millionaire?" If not, go see it. That represents a large number of orphaned children's lives in India. Begging on the streets and eating out of garbage cans. The reality for children in these countries who do not have parents is absolute devastation. Please do some research on this before you ask why people like me adopted from another country. Please recognize that adoption out of foster care in the U.S. is far from easy and is not for everyone. You chose to adopt through this route, and that is your choice. I chose to adopt internationally, and that is my choice. Adoptive parents should not criticize each other for those decisions. |

How far do you take that argument? Do you start to ask how come people adopted from other States when there are so many children in your State that need homes? Why do people adopt from other cities when there are children right here in this city waiting for homes?
The simple fact is, we are all citizens of the world and while I have no problems with people adopting at home (I've done that), I also have no problem with people adopting internationally when the process is done within established guidelines. In many of these countries there are little to no social welfare systems in practice and many of these children will languish and die in orphanages while they await adoption.
My oldest daughter was one of them and I have no regrets at all about adopting from India (in my case). There are literally millions of children in orphanages there (12.4 million in 2006 actually) and without international adoptions there would be many more children in need of homes. When one stops to look at the number of adoptions from India (3,332 in 2006) and how many of them were international adoptions (only 853 of them) you can see that in many cases the numbers of international adoptions are a drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing the problems. Some would say "let them take care of their own problems" but I'm afraid I can't be that exclusionary in my thinking. |

Oh really what percentage of people "have articles written about their adoptions"? Not many, unless you're only talking about the celebrities.
There are many reasons that average Americans adopt internationally - Personally, I believe any life anywhere in the USA is better than the life of an orphan in a 3rd world country.
Certainly celebrities chose international adoption for the same reason or because it is easier and more fair to control access to their adopted children by birth families that way - Can you imagine the press getting ahold of the birth parents/families of a domestic child Brad & Angelina adopt?
Either way you look at it, the big debate over International Adoption should really stop - It is legal - It is not your choice, but it is legal. |

Perhaps because they feel threatened by the fact that adoptees search for the truth of their origins and going overseas is a sure way of cutting a child off completely from their roots and never seeing their family again.
Just a thought. It's ugly, self-centred and cruel IMO. |

i understand what you are asking. sure we are all human beings and if you can help it shouldn't matter who you help, but to be honest it just seems like human nature to help those closest to you first. but to me the major point is like you said, why do they write articles about people adopting from other countries like they are doing something better than people who adopt children here. |
