Question about cps.........................

I dont know where else to ask this at but I have a question regarding remodeling homes and children living in them.

Is it ok for me to remodel my home and have my children live in it at the same time?
someone told me it was a bad idea for me and my husband to remodel since I have 4 children and im expecting another child... We have a few windows that need to be replaced (they are old) and I'd like to get new drywall in 1 room before the baby is here.

could someone call cps on me for remodeling? sorry it sounds like a dumb question but I am curious before we start ? thanks

Keep a gate and/or door where the children can't be around the dust, remodeling, debris, and tools associated with remodeling. Windows shouldn't take more than a few hours each to take out the old ones, and put the new in. It would probably be a good idea for you to take the kids early in the morning for the drywall to be ripped out, and have the windows open to that room that day. Also, after the mud is put back on, during the time it has to be sanded, you'll need to leave again. The drywall dust is really aggravating. Also, during painting you and the kids should be away from the house.

In the long run, the kids will all benefit from new windows being more efficient, and saving utility bills, the cleaner paints in new drywall, and the ability to be able to clean newer floors easier.

Make sure if any lead paint is present in the old walls, to call a professional to have it removed (as well as asbestos, etc) for any homes built before the late 70's.

The bathroom flooring is pretty easy, and just keep the exhaust fan on, and the kids out of the way of materials, especially the razor blades used.

The only way CPS could do anything is for you to expose them to the dust, the dangers of tools, open spaces, and chemicals used in remodeling. Moving them into one bedroom away from the remodeling is fine temporarily.

If someone called CPS on you, they would most likely get in trouble for making false allegations. Unless you are giving your kids old lead paint chips to eat, you're good to go. ;)

Its not a dumb question, though...people have reports filed on them all the time for the most miniscule things. I think you're fine.

No. CPS doesn't have reason to interfere as long as the children are not being abused or neglected. Someone can call and make a referral but, and CPS may ask questions.

Sometimes it depends on your state and community rules but, the reality is that CPS won't usually interfere even if a family is Homeless unless the children are abused and neglected.

If remodeling were a problem by itself then there would be millions more children in foster care.

Where I would be concerned about remodeling with children in the house if it's an old home (built before 1978) is the possibility of Lead Poison exposure int old paint or asbestos. You may want to have the old paint checked and be sure there is not any asbestos in the home before ripping things open. In most cases you can have these things tested. Lead exposure can cause metal retardation in children and if exposed will show up in their blood. So if doing the remodel yourself I would advise paying for testing first just because you wouldn't want to expose yourself or your children.

In some states like California there are Guidelines about where children Sleep and Change clothes and what ages and genders children can be if sleeping in the same room. So, if you put all of the children in one bedroom during the remodel there could be a "cause for concern"

The bottom line is that if anyone did call CPS they would have to have cause to investigate. If they do investigate they would let you know what the concerns were. If they believed the children were not safe they would give you a case plan to correct the situation. Based on ONLY the fact of the remodel I doubt they would be very concerned at all unless there were OTHER reasons also.

Has someone told you they would report to CPS if you remodel?

People COULD call CPS because that is what they do when they THINK there is a case but I don't see a case here and am sure that CPS won't see one either. You are simply remodeling your home, no harm in that. Just make sure to address all safety issues. Keep your children away from the areas that are being remodeled and away from potentially harmful chemicals (if you are using any). I don't see the big deal, in the long run, you are making your home safer for your family.

I'm a foster parent, and we actually remodeled while we had foster children!! We did have to be careful, but the reason we did the remodeling was because they changed the standards for foster care, and a room we used as a bedroom could not be a bedroom anymore, even though no foster children were in it, or even on that floor of the house! So we had to turn the stairway completely around, and wall off the room before June that year, or they could have closed our foster home. We did all that with two foster children in our home, plus our biochildren.

Remodel your house. Improving or fixing your house is something you have to do over time. CPS is not about taking children from people, they are about helping & preserving the family.

Nobody's going to call CPS on you for remodeling. I grew up in California, in a three-bedroom house with fourteen other people and a cracked foundation, and nobody ever called CPS on my parents.

moi
anyone can call them on anyone for any reason and a lot of times people abuse this and threaten and do it to people out of vindictiveness and although it is slander,it is very hard to do anything about it. When someone calls they do check it out no matter what. However as long as there are no missing roofs, hazards, and things of those sorts the case will be unfounded. There are people in really bad situations that cps cant do anything baout because they arent bad enough....
I actually would be more concerned about the remodeling with being pregnant than cps being called. Although I do remember painting during one of my pregnancies so it should be okay....
:O)
P.S
If you call cps and ask them, they will tell you...

if someone really thinks its a bad idea, they might call. honestly, cps gets called for a lot of things. maybe you can see if there is somewhere you guys can stay while the house is being remodeled.
