Question for people who have adopted?

How much on average does it cost to adopt a child in the US? Are there certain qualifications you have to meet to adopt? If so, what are some of them? How long does the process generally take? What should I expect? Any info is helpful.....

Foster/adoption is less than $2000, and sometimes is even free. Here's an article I wrote on how it works:

It can be expensive, the easiest way is to foster to adopt, you have to have a home study first |

The homestudy process usually takes from 3-6 months to get all paperwork done including background checks etc. A homestudy costs anywhere from 1800-5000 to get depending on the agency. You will have to prove financial ability to care for the child, health of you and your spouse (both physical and mental), ability to parent, etc. This is true through a private or public agency. It can be hard as you have to be honest about every aspect of your life but look at it this way if it was your birth child wouldn't you want to know that these things were being done?
I recommend also foster to adopt as there are so many children who need homes. To adopt through foster care it would be less than 2000 and sometimes free. To adopt privately can be anywhere from 18000 to 35000. Good luck. |

yes, there are many qualifications.
you should look online at the website.
i live in st clair county michigan, so if i would go to the foster care website in that area. because there are the same qualifications for adoptions.
you need to have a certain amount of room in your house, like bedrooms. and there are many other things also.
they must do a criminal check on you also.
do foster care, rather than just adopting, because you want to have the kid living with you for a while before you adopt them to make sure everything is going to work out. a lot of times kids are too badly damaged to live a normal life, but you might not be aware of that, especially if you go straight to adoption.
and i suggest that you do not adopt teenager, unless you do foster care. and you are sure that you know what that particular child is like. im not saying that all older children available for adoption are bad, because that is not true at all. but generally, they have too many behavioral issues, and coping and bonding issues also.
and adoption, doesnt take very long. if you have a kid that is up for adoption, and the parents rights have been terminated on, it wont take any more than a year...it could take just a month or so. it just depends, the papers get sent to the states capital, and it just goes on the bottom of their stack. and when they get there, they get there. (it has to be approved by the state, it will, but they just need to sign things. but it jsut depends how much they have going on at the capital.
i hope you understood everything that i was trying to explain to you. and i hope that if this is something you plan on doing, that everything works out great for you :) |

I would imagine it can be different for each case. I adopted a niece, her "mother" (note the quotes) was a deadbeat who had her rights terminated. It took about a year and a half... partly because I drug my feet. I think I could have done it in a year or less. |
