Questions about adopting through foster care system? answer please(:?
|
okay so im 14 and an only child and i've always wished my mom would adopt (single mom) but she said it was so expensive and i know they cost like 30,000 dollars at least. so i was researching and found that the foster care system is usually little to no cost and we could adopt in state, or atleast in the US.
but i have a few questions...
exactly how much does it cost?
would my mom be able to do it?
and would we be able to keep the child, or would it be just a foster child whom is apt to be taken from us etc?
answers greatly appreciated.
10 pts to best answer once i get a few! (: thanksss ahead of time! Additional Details pleaseee answer people(:

Sweetie, your mom has to want to adopt. It's not enough that you want a sibling.
I adopted my son from foster care in California and the process was basically free. I had to pay to have my fingerprints done and sent to Sacramento for processing and I had to buy a few things like extra smoke detectors and locks for the kitchen cupboards, but that stuff is all inexpensive. Of course I had to buy toys, clothes, and furniture for a child as well.
If your mom doesn't have a criminal record, she should be eligible to adopt from foster care. She will have to show several years' worth of tax forms and some recent pay stubs to show that she can support another child. She can also request that she only foster a child whose parental rights have already been terminated (lessening the chance that the child will return to his or her biological parents) but there aren't many children in the system whose parental rights have already been terminated. The states are generally unwilling to make a child of ward of the state, which is what happens when parental rights are terminated and the child has nowhere to go.
When I adopted my son from foster care, his first mother's parental rights had not yet been terminated. There was a hearing 3 months after my son was placed with me in which his mother's rights were terminated because she was unable to complete the court's requirements. Some kids go back to their original families and others do not. Then they're available for adoption. For the most part, the courts act in the best interests of the children. If it is in the child's best interests to return to his or her parents and the parents are able to complete their programs, then yay! We're happy for the child. It is ALWAYS best for a child to be with his or her biological family if the family is not abusive or neglectful. Period.
IF your mom is interested in adoption, foster care is the way to go. Tell her about this board and ask her to do some reading. She can also ask questions like you did. There are a lot of people here with good information that can help. |

I believe the only cost is the actual court costs...ours is $160 but varies depending on the court. You don't have to foster to adopt, you can choose to just adopt. In that case, you would only be presented with a child/children that are legally free for adoption. Single people can adopt as long as they have the means to provide for the child and she would have to pass the home study and everything else that comes along with adopting through that specific agency. I hope this helps. |
