Re Lactation for Adoption?
Find answers to your legal question.

Re Lactation for Adoption?

I am considering re lactation for an impending adoption. I breastfed 8 years ago. I am able to express small amounts of breast milk by hand expression and have heard stories of herbal/medicinal ways of achieving a higher level of success. I have not found hand pumping any use, the suction does not feel adequate.

Any thoughts/ideas/websites?

Just be sure not to use Mommy2sq's lactation consultant, who appears to have advised her to use baby's in her daycare business to 'practice' on - nothing short of child molestation IMO!

The thought of anyone but my natural mother breastfeeding me makes me want to hurl BTW
But this really isn't about benefitting the adoptee is it now

There is nothing beneficial nor nutritious with drug induced breast milk. La leche league is wrong.

Unless you plan on bottling it for the rest of your family to drink with their cookies, I would say don't subject the child being adopted to it.

The Nursing Mother's Companion is a book that has a whole section on Re-lactation. It tells the drugs/methods for achieving re-lactation for adoption purposes.

If I was able to when we adopted our two babies, I would have!

Le Leche League is NOT wrong. The World Health Organization says so.

Their guidelines for infant feeding, in order of preference:
Breastmilk from the mother
Breastmilk from any other woman
Breastmilk from a bottle
Infant replacement formula
goat's milk
cow's milk

Contact a lactation consultant in your town for information and to rent a hospital grade electric pump to bring up your supply. (ask your GYN or a local doula to recommend one!)

This is a lot of work, but is the absolute best thing you can do for a baby that is not staying with his first mother. You will reduce his incidence of childhood illnesses, including cancer, and his likelyhood of contracting a whole host of adult onset diseases, including obesity and diabetes!

There are a few medicinal ways to induce lactation, however putting medication in your body, that will be transferred to a newborn is certainly not the best way to do it. They are so small and using drugs like that can cause severe health issues in babies.
However there are herbal remedies that you can use that are PERFECTLY safe for the baby. Breast feeding has been shown to provide so very many health benefits. Even if you are not the biological mother, its the "goods" in breast milk that makes it so important for the baby... Please, don't go on that other persons answer (about there are no benefits, etc) they are horribly misinformed and completely wrong.
You are 1000% correct in wanting to breast feed. Its a wonderful choice and perfectly normal for you to want to do this. It helps the baby with their immune system and so much more, plus it helps you two bond.
I used this tincture. Its specially made for women who are adopting and want to breast feed. I have PCOS and could not make enough breast milk so I was never able to feed much. With this, I was able to breast feed exclusively for over 8 months !!

Hope this helps and good luck!

This question has been asked before and people on this site feel very strongly against breast feeding an adopted child.

I would advise you to try as few different sites.
www.lllusa.org (La leche league)
www.forums.adoption.com has users that have succesfully breast fed and are feeding.
