Recommendations?

So, my husband and I have been interested in adoption for a while now. I'm 27, He's 31, we've been married for 3 1/2 years now and have a biological daughter. We are financially, emotionally, and collectively in a great place and really want to expand our family through international adoption.
We are looking at 3 countries in particular:
Vietnam (as of Selt. 2008, they are open again to the US)
Thailand (also opened again in 08)
Taiwan
We (for private reasons) would like a girl from infancy to 5 years of age.
Does any one have experiences with adoption in any of these places or a recommendation on which is the best to adopt from? Any Advice?

I agree with Independent, you'd need to define the word 'best' when you ask which country is best to adopt from.

What are your priorities? Are you looking for the country with the most ethical & transparents system? Are you looking for the country with the greatest need for adoptive parents? Are you looking for the place with the easiest paperwork? The place that has the most cultural resources available to you here in the US? Are you thinking about expenses? Wait time?

You will need to define the word "best" in order to get a clear answer. I would recommend living in any of those countries before you adopt and learn the language as well as the culture. It will be best for the emotional well being of the child.

The first link is to a film that hasn't come out yet, but you can watch the trailer. It sounds awesome, and I plan to get my copy asap.

The second link is to a film that has come out, and I've heard great reviews.

Talk to international adoptees, and first parents (if you can find them). There's no better place to get your information than from those who lived it!

In mid June, the U.S. Embassy contacted the Vietnamese Office of the Government in response to rumors that the Government of Vietnam had changed its policy regarding adoption dossiers still pending (without a referral) when the Agreement expires on September 1, 2008. The Office of the Government stated unequivocally that no decision has been made to change this policy.

I am not sure who is giving you this information about adoptions from Vietnam but I would contact the State Department.

To answer your question since you have a three year and a half year old I would not adopt out of birth order. DD has a friend in her cyberschool cop-op that was adopted from Vietnam when she was almost six. There is such a need for older child adoptions whether it be in another country or here in the United States.

You must do your homework and research any adoption agencies that were involved in corruption in these countries and DO NOT work with them period. You will also need a support person who can speak the child's language. While very young children pick up English quickly you should make a serious effort to keep them using their native language too.

Your 'priviate' reason is hardly priviate.

Your type of adopter ALWAYS wants a girl. Hubby can stomach raising (and putting his name on) a girl that's not his more than pretending a boy is his.

My advice is to 'look' at your country of origin instead of combing the globe for a kid.
