Regarding different fees for infant adoptions, based on race?
|
I remember asking this question of an agency that had different fees, based on the race of the child. I was told that the agency had received some kind of grant (can't recall if it was state or federal) that was designed to offset the adoption costs for adopting infants of minority races (specifically African American or biracial) and they could therefore charge reduced fees.
I was wondering, do grants like that really exist? Was the agency's reasons legitimate or were we being fed a line? This was 6-7 years ago, btw.
Thanks.

Private grants can be used for pretty much anything the donor wants, so yes, in the case of that specific agency it's possible that someone felt a pull to help minority babies find homes. Maybe he/she felt that would encourage African American families to consider these placements. Donating private grants is perfectly legal, as is designating who can be the recipients, so a person can definitely target grants toward helping minorities.
The thing is, many if not MOST agencies have lower fees or different "programs" for minority adoptions. It's not really possible that they're ALL receiving private grants to help place minority children. What you were told about grants may be true for any one specific agency, but across the board it is a matter of supply and demand, that transcends one organization. Minority children are harder to place, and so agencies can't get a return if they charge fees that are as high. It does unfortunately come down to demand.
So while it's entirely possible that the particular agency you were talking to was receiving grants as they said... that doesn't explain why almost EVERY agency has the same policies. |

My honest answer is that white babies cost more to adopt than minority babies because they are more in demand. Plain and simple facts. It shouldn't be that way and it's not fair, but thats the way it is. |

To be honest, I think it has more to do with supply and demand. White babies are supposedly in more demand than other races.
The only discount we were offered is if we went through their agency again for another child, within a year. That was only because we wouldn't need another home study done.
Our child is bi-racial and thinking about it now, I would be offended if we were offered a lower 'price' for him, because imo, he's priceless. |

I think some agencies do actually have grants from certain organizations to offset costs of adoption of AA or Biracial babies. But honestly, I think they just charge what they want and how they want, and most do not have such grants. It's amazing to me what they can get away with. I find it appalling to see the lists of "prices" as if you are at a store or something!!!! Blah!!! It's awful. |

Good Job

I don't know a 100% but it makes sense. We know that people don't want to adopt minorities so a lower fee might make them (for lack of a better term) marketable. |

There are grants, various legal fees, various natural parent medical expenses that differ from state to state that can make charges much different from each other--even from the same agency. I am not excusing the costs or the insensitivity that comes across from the social workers and the agencies who post them. |

I agree with "Kathy B"! Our baby boy is bi-racial... and we would not trade him for the world!!! He is ours in every way -except genes.
The adoption agency we went though did not charge us any differently according to his race.... but we understand that the government gives tax credit according to the childs' race.
We, also, hear that to adopted a newborn "white" baby, the wait is at least 2 years.... whereas, if you are not "picky", the wait is only a few months at most.
As for the original question about grants: check on-line... you'll find that , yes! there are grants for that very purpose. |
