Senator John McCain's adopted daughter?
Find answers to your legal question.

Senator John McCain's adopted daughter?

How is it that John McCain became an adoptive father without knowing it ahead of time?

According to his interview with dadmag, his wife had already decided to adopt Bridget, brought her here from India for some medical treatment, and introduced her to John with "Say hello to your new little daughter."

Does this leave anyone else wondering what about the required homestudies PAP's must pass before a child is placed in a home?

Interview link: http://www.dadmag.com/archive/060400jmccain.php

Thank you for your thoughts.

Additional Details
This concerns me because the adoption process should always include thorough screening, interviews, and background checks, etc. of BOTH PAP's BEFORE any child is placed in a prospective adoptive home. It should never come as a surprise to anyone that there's a newly adopted child in your home.

This indicates either:

A) it was not standard practice to do a thorough homestudy at that time in that country,

OR-

B) there were homestudy requirements in place to protect children, but they were overlooked for whatever reason in this case.

Either way, the McCain's words and actions are more akin to someone bringing home a stray puppy and asking their spouse if they can keep it.

It's no surprise he supports easier ways for PAP's to obtain children for themselves through adoption.

Hi Julie,

haha...I asked this same question a few months back. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjCOvQLHd1I9nqH6d_VanFnty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080619115106AA35I2V

This, among other things about this adoption bother me greatly. Bridget, from all accounts came to America for surgery with another child in the orphanage. She and the other child were never returned and both were adopted, Briget to the McCain's and the other child to friends of theirs. The adoption took place just after Cindy McCain became addicted to vicadin and percocet. McCain has repeated the same story in this article to every other news source, so it is concerning, because BOTH parents would need to sign documents and visit the country in most cases. B/C I am not up on international adoption practices from the 90's, I don't know what the actual requirements would have been to adopt Briget, but I would think that there would need to be a drug test by both parents and that they would both need to complete paperwork and both be aware that they were adopting.
If you listen to McCain, he sometimes changes his phrases and memories to fit a certain crowd or time....the only thing I can think is that he knew he was adopting and knew he had completed paperwork, but decided to relate the story this way instead. I honestly don't think he understands how 'bad' it comes across in the adoption world. However, since he has never told a different version of this story, it has always bothered me and I have always listened out for him to make a clearer explaination.
Politics aside, I think it is either highly suspect or that McCain's embellishments of the story make adoption seem kind of shady.

quite honestly all i ever see them with is the little blonde one. i guess bridget (who many thought was black) is back at house number 3...or 4...or 7 hand sewing cindy's suits.

Senator McCain's wife doesn't seem to think that the rules of civic duty and privilege apply to her. Apparently, fame and wealth can buy anything.

It is disturbing that the two girls removed from Mother Teresa's Orphanage were sent to the USA for medical treatment. Their visas, travel documents, etc. would all have been approved on the assumption that they would return to their country of origin. In the case of the McCain's, the decision to adopt was made, it seems, hastily and without forethought. I find Senator McCain's flippant response about how he had no part in the decision sad.

McCains wife has lied about a lot of things. eg she called herself an only child when she has a half sister. She also lied and said that Mother Teresa encouraged her to adopt, when she has never meet mother Teresa.

I question home studies every time I read about a-babies being murdered by a-parents.

As far as the McCain situation....its a perfect example of how to run around the law because you have money. Use the excuse you want to get them health care and turn around and buy them. It was so sweet how she shared the wealth with her friend and gave her one of the kids, huh.
When I saw him on TV the other night talking about Cindy adopting and adoption reform, I got the feeling that he's more interested in getting votes instead of the looking out for children's best interests. He even said adoptive parents should be able to "get" children quicker. I lost respect for McCain when I heard about how he treated his first family and was cheating on them after years of standing by him. Now I have disrespect for him. If abandoning your wife after she was disabled by an auto accident for a fresh piece of TNA is what family values is about...I truly pity anyone that looks up to him.

PlAin and simple politicans get by with what you will not ever even dream of!!! Plus his wife is vain looking!! He does not seem fatherly to me either!!! I could careless about his or obama being president. But parenting obama wins that!! Mccain is just not seeming ly to be a dowding father!!! They probably stole the child legally!!!

Well it is really showing that he has read all the papers that he singed or did his wife sign for him wow that makes him more easy if he is not around then some1 can do it for him

I am happy that the girl has a fine home.
What this particular adoption points out however is, that money talks and not all is fair in life.

I have no idea. I expect that once again the media is taking the story behind the adoption and not presenting it correctly.

I believe by her saying that, it was a "hey- we're going to adopt her" kind of statement. In her eyes, even though she brought her over for medical reasons, knowing she needed a family, she probably was attached from the moment she laid eyes on her and just presented her to John in that maner.

I'm sure once she knew John was onboard, they started the process. In a sense they were fostering her until the process was final.

From the day my oldest daughter was in the home to when she was finely adopted (from India as well) was almost 4 years. During that time we referred to her, from day one, as "our daughter". I suspect that the same was the case here since he would have had to sign the legal papers to finalize the adoption. I think this is much a due about nothing.

I admit that it was sort of strange to not tell her husband before she brought those children over that one of them was going to be adopted by them. However, that is just the service of why people are making a big deal about this- he is running for pres. and anything to take and persuade the country not to vote for him, they will do. Besides, why would this change anyones mind anyway. That child is apart of that family now. Can we stop bickering about things like this, and be grateful that they adopted a child. YIKES, people
