Typically, how long is the wait if you would like to adopt children from a less-fortunate country?

I have always wanted to help out some orphans from less-fortunate countries and adopt them as my own, but I have heard that you may have to wait up to seven years before you are allowed to become their parent and take them home? Is this true? Also, how do you go about choosing a child that is right for you, and what are the guidelines of adopting. Eg. Do you have to be married, a certain age, have a certain job? Please help particularly if you have adopted before!
Thanks xxo

How come you don't want to adopt our own country's kids?
America is full of children who need homes. Let's take care of them first before venturing out to other countries.
It's a lengthy process to adopt foreign children and very costly.
No you don't have to be married.

My wife and I waited 6 weeks to adopt in India but we were temporarily living there at the time. Most people I spoke with while there had been waiting 2-3 years to adopt from India but doing it directly from their home countries. It can of course take more time or less but count on a couple of years at least.

A co-worker of mine was on a waiting list for 2 1/2 years to adopt a girl from China, and the Chinese agency told her it would probably be another 2 years before the adoption was final.

Hi, most countries allow single women or married couples to adopt provided they are aged 25 - 45. In countries such as Russia children are first made available to Russians then after 18months (varies from different areas) are made available to international adoptions. Depending on what type of child you would like to adopt in Russia the process takes on average 18months, but in China and Guatemala it can be up to 2.5 years i have heard. Also both our boys have cerebral palsy, as it is more common for children to be made available for adoption if they have health concerns.

Sparkles
It would be easier to adopt from this country.
