It should be as wrong for agencies to sell babies as for parents to sell babies. Yes, it is the same thing. But the difference is that agencies together with adoption lawyers comprise a big industry that has a lot of money to throw at politicians to ensure that laws go their way.
Baby selling, whether by parents or baby brokers (agencies) is illegal in places such as Australia. They don't see the ethical difference. The United Nations considers it to be human trafficking.
The price is set by consumer demand and agency staff can make a LOT of money from it. The only thing that "non-profit" means is that there are no shareholders and that profits are paid directly to staff and directors rather than shareholders.
Your baby can sell for $20,000 or more by an agency or an adoption lawyer. It cost me only $200 in court filing fees to adopt-back my adult child in 2007. See the money they make?
Money talks. And money can buy babies for those who can't have one of their own but can afford to buy someone else's.
Also check out these links for how agencies did research starting from 1976 onwards on how to get you to surrender your child.
"An Adoption Agency lobby group uses federal grant money to hire a research and marketing firm to probe into the minds of mothers developing a “birthmother brand development” to sell to the “consumers’ in order to promote a more positive public perception of adoption so that more mothers will “make the loving choice” to be separated from their babies fulfilling the needs to the clients, the agencies." (from "The National Council for Adoption: Mothers, Money, Marketing, and Madness")
In a $1.8 billion dollar a year industry, there is big money to be made from convincing mothers to surrender their babies.
What happens if there is no industry convincing them to surrender? Mothers keep their babies. These stats are from http://livinglearningwriting.wordpress.com/2008/10/26/flashback-politics-adoption-or-why-adoption-isnt-the-solution-to-abortion/
In 2003…..
Massachusetts population: 6, 200, 000
South Australia population: 1, 527, 000
Massachusetts # of births: 80, 167
South Australia # of births: 17, 000*
Massachusetts # of voluntary-placement domestic infant adoptions: 276
South Australia # of voluntary-placement domestic infant adoptions: 3 |

Parents cannot do that, but agencies, lawyers and corrupt governments can. For them to do it, it's legal human trafficking/baby selling, but it's called adoption. For parents to do it, it's called illegal human trafficking, and it will get you prison time.
It does NOT cost 30 thousand dollars to arrange an adoption. Court fees cost minimum $300.00, upwards to $1000.00. Home studies are NOT that expensive. It is plain and simple business tactics. Supply and demand.
Just like new toys. Say Hannah Montana comes out with a new doll. It sells for $25.00 at Toys R Us. Sells out in a day, and they are hard to find. People want this new Hannah Montana doll, so they scour the internet, newspapers and other stores to find her. They FINALLY find one on ebay for $500.00. And they pay that price, because they want that doll, and there are so few available. Is it illegal? Nope. Is it immoral? Youbetcha. |

Actually FM's if they do adoption through an adoption lawyer. They can't get as much money as the agencies though. I wish they would do away with agencies then everyone would go through adoption lawyers. I mean sure lawyers make money off the APs but, not like the agencies. They are horrible they take thousands and thousands of dollars just to introduce you. Not to mention they are very pushy once a young lady walks through the door because, they really want them to put their baby up for adoption so they can rob a family blind. I would rather help the first mom then give money to an agencies. At least the money is going to the right person. Not to mention when people go with adoption a lot of times it is because, of money maybe it would help them get back on their feet if they got the money the agencies get.

One thing you must consider is that agencies not only have to pay court costs and homestudy fees but they have to pay operating costs such as ;
rent for the office building, utilities (electricity, phone, internet, etc), supplies, and salaries for all employees- social workers, receptionist, janitor, etc. A lot of the fees also go to advertising cost, since there are SO many agencies, and if they don't have families and expectant moms to work with, then they will have to close down. For this reason, many agencies also allow high limits for "assistance" for expectant mothers, in hopes that their agency will be chosen over others.
Also, private adoption agencies don't get government funding the way the fostercare system does, if the fostercare system wasn't subsidised, and parents adopting from fostercare had to cover their portion of the cost, then it would be REALLY expensive as well.
I certainly am not defending those agency directors and lawyers who take advantage and try to make tons of money off of each adoption, but I was suprised to find out how little money many agency social workers actualy make. Domestic adoption definetly shouldn't have to cost what it does, but I think instead of blaming all the agencies for being greedy, the whole domestic adoption system needs to be changed, and not run as individual businesses forced to compete against each other. With the curent system in place it would be difficult to run an agency with low fees, while maintaining ethical practices. |

It makes sense. The need money to help support the child and pay for the workers and other expenses. They get paid more to adopt out the child because they are no longer taking money from the state to support it rather the parents are now financially responsible. It's not an evil thing at all. It encourages the agencies to take a pro active approach to find the child a home. Without the bonus, they might be tempted to horde the children to keep the cash inflow coming from the government. |

Money and adoption, should just not go together.
Thank god I was adopted from foster care and not paid for. |

it takes money to do things.. like find parents and make sure they are the right parents for the child and medical things for the birth mother if she does not have any and court papers and lawyer papers.
things are not done for free. |
