The first thing you should do is be sure to educate yourself on some of the issues that adoptees may face. Going into a situation such as adoption with as much information as you can is the best way to help both yourself and the child.

Here are some books you might want to read:

* "Being Adopted: The Lifelong Search for Self" by Brodzinsky, Schecter, and Henig

* "Journey of the Adopted Self" by Betty Jean Lifton

* "The Primal Wound" by Nancy Verrier

Foster care was one of the most horrible, disturbing, heart breaking things I have ever had to endure. I am 1 of 5 kids. My little brother and little sister didnt make it out of the states grip, they got adopted into two different families. Most kids in foster care have gone trough alot of abuse and neglect. If you are considering being a foster parent then you better be one of the most patient, understanding ,caring people in this world. Alot of those kids have serious issues... By the time I got out of the system and back to my REAL mother... I had post traumatic stress disorder, severe anxiety disorder, depression, i was totally anti-social.. I wouldnt go out in public, I was paranoid and I had serious anger management issues.
Now im 20 and I still have alot of problems, although I have worked very hard to ge through it. I refuse to use medications to "make me better"..They drug half those kids to keep them quiet and to continue to do what they want... The state is cruel and disgusting... Not to mention we should have never been taken from our parents to begin with... We hadnt been abused, neglected or harmed....in any way.. I was old enough to remember... So I told you all of this to let you know that as a foster parent you need to be VERY prepared...and you also need to be VERY loving and understanding...

Wow - good for you. I would give you one piece of advice - go through your state foster program. You will go through training to foster and there is an option to foster-adopt. In this case the state will pay for EVERYTHING from filing the paperwork to completion. It's basically free. You won't necessarily get a newborn, but the child will know he/she is adopted anyway, so why not. I never got why so many people only want newborns.

adoption through the foster care system. My caseworker told us that out of pocket, other than the care of the child, the adoption would cost about $75.00 - $125.00.

Call an adoption attorney. It cuts out the middle man, adoption agencies. It's still quite expensive, but a little less. They will help find you a birth mother and everything. Also, if you find your own baby it's cheaper because they don't do that work for you. In my area it is $2800 less. You can use websites such as parentprofiles.com to connect to a birthmother. Once you find one, contact the adoption attorney to start the paperwork. In my area if i found my own baby, the cost would be about $5600 plus the cost of a homestudy which is $700-$1500 plus any cost the mother may need (for example medical bills, counceling, helping her buy food and paying rent, etc.) In my research to adopt, this is the cheapest method unless you go through your states dss. In that case, it is pretty much free, just a longer more drawn out process.
I hope everything goes well for you.

Hey Sassy! I'm soo glad that we have people like you in this world. If you really a good person why don't adopt a kid outside of USA, like PAKISTAN OR INDIAN, OR ASIAN. Those kids do really need help i'm pretty sure you will be able to provide better service to those kid and they will be very thanks to you. so, good luck.
