Wanting to go into foster care..any advice?

I am 21 years old and my husband is 29 and we are thinking about starting some classes to become foster parents. But I do have some questions...What are the income requirements?? Do you have to own your own home?? Can you lay down an age limit, such as 5? Can you adopt from foster care?? Thanks for all of the info! We live in Tn

You have a lot of options in foster care. I live in NC and work for an agency that provides foster care. As far as your answers to your questions…. There are no set income requirements (some people are foster parents for a living! Some people don’t know that as foster parents, you are paid a stipend for your services. You don’t have to own your own home; however, you have to have an adequate dwelling that will support your family and the foster child(ren); In NC, I know that you can state your preferences in age (i.e. 5 year old girl). I would imagine it is the same in TN. You can also adopt… Here, DSS LOVES adoptive placements….

Also, you have other options. You can become licensed through the state (DSS); or you can become licensed through an agency that provides foster care. I am partial to agencies (because I work for one); so I would recommend finding a nonprofit foster care agency. I would ask questions about the amount of consultation/support that they provide. If you get a child that is a special needs child, you are going to want support from the agency whenever there are issues. Hope that helped.

There are no set income requirements---they look at your expense sheet and your income sheet. They take into account how many people depend on your income.
No you don't have to own your own home.
You can set your own age bracket such as 0--2; 6--18; 0--18. Any variation you wish.
IF your state has foster to adopt--then yes you can.
Many families yearly adopt from foster care.

yes you can adopt from foster care. Contact them as their are some classes and stuff you need to take. And go for it. They will answer all your questions, they usually have like foster to adopt week end seminar where you get all your questions answered
