We are interested in adopting a special needs child ?

we probably won't be ready for a while, up to five years. Is there anything we can or should be doing now to prepare ourselves.

I hope you are looking into foster care adoption, because there are plenty of children with special needs who need a home.

The first thing you need to do is figure out what "special needs" of the child you think you are going to be able to parent (and help).
Start reading about special needs. Find out what disorders you think you can handle ~ example: development disorders vs. say children with cerbreal palsy vs. those with fetal alcohol syndrome. Reading about special needs will allow you to estimate what you think you will be able to "handle."

Also, read about methods for raising and working with special needs children.

For example: I work with kids with developmental disorders (and emotional and behavioral disorders). We use positive reinforcement and a points system to help the children. This is a common "parenting" method as well. Reward and praise for everything positive, even little things.

Reading about parent's experiences might be helpful as well.

Yes. Start working with kids at a local school or afterschool program. You Get to know the different types of needs these children have. This may help you both in looking good for the case worker as well as giving you some insight into what you can and cannot handle. I would suggest that you apply through foster care to adopt. Start a little earlier than you are 'ready' as the paper work and background takes anywhere from 3 months to 1 1/2 years to complete.

Try babysitting special needs children or taking a part time job working with special needs children. Special needs children aren't easy to take care of. It depends on what the child's developments or lack of developments are but in severe cases it can be like taking care of a baby for the rest of his/her life. You've got to be prepared and know what you are getting your self into.

You may want to start talking to an adoption agency now. They can assist you in preparing yourselves and your home for your newest addition. There are LOTS of hoops to jump through to adopt a special needs child, so it may take 5 years even if you started the process tomorrow. Mine as well get to it. Good luck.
