Personally, I think parents who adopt out of the impending doom of 'empty nest syndrome' are creepy. If I were your mother, I wouldn't try to adopt an infant.

Why don't you guys try fostering children instead? There are plenty of children out there who are bouncing around the foster system that really need a good stable home... sometimes it's just until their biological family gets themselves back together... sometimes it's permanent. One constant is that they ALL need a safe place to call home for some span of time.

i was a second phase family, filling the emptying nest.

i can tell you it was pretty lonely.
i pretty much didn't know the siblings - one off starting her own family, one away at college, the high school one wanting nothing to do with me.
my parents were, by that time, older and more sedentary.
so nobody played catch with me or took me to the park, etc., like they did my siblings when they were young.
and people always wondered who this older couple was - because it was transracial they could see i was adopted, but they figured they were my grandparents.
i kind of felt like a hobby for my mom, a project to keep her busy with until my dad retired, because that had always been her role and she was soon to be without a purpose - only by this time, she'd done the PTA and she'd done all the typical mom things, and she wasn't very excited about putting forth that much effort.
while it was exciting for all adopting me, that wore off pretty quickly.

i feel i got short-changed.

personally, i think one family is enough blessings for anybody and it's time to let other people in the prime of their life be parents.

btw, my kids have just left home and i am signing up for a big sister program soon. i'm really excited about this - i get to make a difference in someone's life, but they aren't forced to comfort me as i grow old. looking forward to having a young friend. maybe your mom would find that rewarding as well. and Zuko's suggestion to foster parent is what the world needs more of. neo-natal units sometimes need people to rock babies as well. and some schools have reading mentorship programs. there are plenty of volunteer opportunities for empty-nesters to enrich their lives and the lives of children - she could look into these instead!

Proud
13 and 15 and you're almost out of college? By some of your spelling mistakes, I find that hard to believe nor do I see what relevance it has to the question.

Either way, its perfectly normal for single women to adopt a child. If your mother wants to adopt a child, she needs to contact an adoption agency and start the process. It can take years.

Without knowing more about you I can't say if its a good choice. However seeing as you are a financially and emotionally stable family, lack of a farther should not be a problem. Can I suggest looking into adopting a older child if you want a child soon? Babies are adopted so fast you may have to wait years, but older kids often as young as 3 live their whole childhood in foster care.

People she said out to college, they'll be going in 5 and 3 years respectivly be polite.

Man, some of the people who answered are SO stupid. She clearly said "almost out TO college" not out OF college. Maybe you should all read before making fun of her!

Single people can still adopt. It doesn't matter whether or not your parents are together. If your mother would like to adopt, she definitely should. There are many babies, children, and teens who need a home.

My parents adopted my brother from Romania. I think it's a good idea. You are changing a life.

well its sad. if you were going to adopt someone that was nearer your age an dstuff that would be nice to help them out and they would always remember you and be thankful for you and mom. but a baby nope shes not young enough and that is so much added mess for her to have a baby. but she can adopt they do let singles do this more and more.
