What's the age limit on adopting toddlers?

My neighbor is a little over 60 years old and she wants to adopt a 3 year old boy from another state.
Is that possible? If so, are the age limits different in each state?

Take a look at this link from the Child Welfare Gateway. Find your state in the document and Google the exact law referenced. You should then be able to find the requirements in your state.

tell her to adopt a teenager. teens cant get homes like small children can, and the little boy is more likely to be adopted by a younger couple. because of her age, they will probably consider how close she is do dying (sorry to be so blunt)
tell her to give a teenager or an older child a home. they need it so much more.
good luck!! |

The age limits are different in every state. But "age" is not the set-in-stone determining factor in most cases. It has to do more with ability than anything.
Let me ask you this in response:
Will she get down on the floor and play with him? Can she easily lift and carry him? Does she have a support network in place if he needs alternative care (because she becomes ill, incapacitated, etc.)? Will she be able to financially support a child when she will be nearly 80 when he graduates high school? Is she excited about going to football (or whatever) games in the late fall, when it will possibly be cold, windy, whatever, in her late 60s and 70s? Will she be expecting HIM to give up his 20s to care for HER (Is this about 'building in' care for herself in later life)? Are there any other adults/older children in the home?
Unless she is a biological relative of the child or has some other *extreme* connection to the natural family already, the odds are probably not good. Her AVERAGE life expectancy -- statistically speaking, even is she is healthy -- will not see him to age 18. That does not bode well for her. |

From what I have heard it's pretty much different everywhere. Some areas have hard cut off marks and some just leave it up to the opinion of the home study worker and case worker.
It may be possible for her or it may not but the only way she can find out for sure is to make some calls to the authorities/agencies in both States to find out what the regs are as they pertain to her. |

I'm not sure about the age limit but they aren't going to let her adopt it they don't think she is in good health or whatever. She will have to go through and evaluation and it will be up to the courts. |

I doubt there is an age limit. But, their age will be considered as part of the home study. The social workers do in the home study will need to decide if the person will be able to handle the child. If she can prove they are in good health then they very well may be able to adopt.
I don't think it is right to assume someone is not capable just on the basis of their age. I have known 60 year olds who are more spry and energectic than many 40 year olds. In one case, I know a couple who are in their 60s who foster 'high demand' kids all the time, including infants. I know it is not the same as adopting, but their age actually makes them better (foster) parents because of their experience. |

Age limits differ depending on the state but as long as she can prove her health is in good condition and she's financially able to care for the boy she should be ok, if the stated doesnt restrict her age. |
