I have always wanted to work for an adoption agency helping parents find a child to adopt and helping kids find a home. What type of education do I need? And what type of jobs are there in this field?

Don't you have that a little backwards? Adoption is supposed to be about what is best for children. Seems to me that concentrating on finding homes for children in need should take priority over finding children for needy parents.
You don't need to work for an agency IF you are about the children, you can become a social worker for foster care. Your degree of study would be social work and psychology.
Working for an agency is not a job I would be proud of. Agencies are there to solicit babies for infertile adoptive couples. They use lies and deceit to rope in vulnerable young women. They SELL babies to the highest bidder.
With foster care, needy children are already in the system. Why would you want to become part of an organization (agency) that CREATES broken families for a buck? |

If you do go to work for an agency, always be honest with the first parents, and the adoptive parents. If a mother who's placing her child wants open adoption, there are many people who would love open adoption, and just because it isn't legally enforceable, doesn't mean that it isn't morally right to let it slide.
My favorite person in the adoption education and process was the teacher who taught us about what foster kids need in the process, and how almost any child can be helped into a good situation with enough love, understanding, patience, tolerance, appropriate discipline, and a lifetime committment. She educated me into knowing that there is a child out there for everyone, but it might not be the child we dream of in our minds, but we'll love it as if it were in our hearts. |

Education needed: the ability to understand that adoption starts with loss, and has a great impact on the child.
that there is more to it than just matching adoptive parents with adoptee's, there are still another set of parents that need to be considered.
I think you have too much heart to be a slippery adoption salesman. You will have to be able to deliberately lie to both sets of parents, be able to ignore other peoples suffering (both sides) and deliberately neglect to tell people important information just to make a sale.
Doesn't sound like a dream job to me, but I hear the money is good if you can get to the top of the scam chain. |

I too think it strange that you would go into this looking to help the parents first. The children are the ones who need the help most of all.
If I were you, I would call DCFS and ask what I could do to help out the foster children who are in a more dire need.
I honestly couldn't live with myself if I knew I contributed to breaking up families and coercing women into giving up children. I couldn't help people do that.
DCFS can point you in the right direction and let you know what you would need to be a social worker or something along those lines. You could help repair and reunite families rather than pull them apart and encourage such a heinous industry. |
