What are the positives and negatives of adopting a child? Racial issues.?

Weird that I was just having a conversation with someone about this today--get out of my head! :-P

Adopting outside of your race presents challenges, particularly for the CHILD, and I think that gets forgotten quite often. The fact is, no matter how much you love a child, and no matter how little race matters to you, it matters to the rest of the world, and it will matter to the child. There needs to be a lot of education and sensitivity on the topic, because as the child is developing their identity, they may begin to feel alienated from either the culture into which they were adopted, the culture into which they were born, or both. It's a much more complex issue than blind love.

Hopefully you will get some answers from transracial adoptees who will be better able to answer you from experience, but that's my two cents.

I say you can adopt who you want. You have to be sure that you let that child know that he/she is the most beautiful child out there no matter what color or shape of their eyes. You have to be ready for the questions they will have for you. Why am I a different color, how come my nose and eyes are different, why do people look at us like that.
I am Mexican and Indian, when I was little I looked black. My mom is white so yes we got a lot of strange looks and sometimes it hurt me. I saw they way people looked at her and then they would look at me. My mom loved me so much she told me never to be ashamed of my color. You have to make sure YOU are strong enough to adopt a child of a different race. Always let him/her know their culture.

Adoption of children present a set of challenges in that they come with some life experiences that they may be able to express well or may not be able to. Some will have issues with being bi racial simply because the contact that they have had with others who had issues. Some may find them not white enough and some may find them not black enough. Being a parent is not an easy job and your going to have challenges with it weather you adopt a baby or child or give birth to a child. Dig your heels in if you decide to parent and do whatever it takes to raise the child. Everyone needs a forever home and a family to love them

cause that's simply how they feel... but not everyone agrees

my family started off all white... but now there are more adopted blacks then us original ones. The first few to join our family never cared that their skin was a different colour, nor do us "minority" whites care that our skin is different then most of our family's. Just like I am the only one with blue eyes and I don't feel any different even though i'm different. My very caucasian children assume they are half haitian by default and are very proud of it the same as my very dark skinned siblings call themselves canadians regardless of their skin tone... and are very proud of it
