There is no '1' answer. It depends where you live, whom or what you wish to adopt, age, stability, criminal record, etc......You may take a certain amount as a deduction on your taxes for the expense. Some places if you will take a hard to place child they will pay the expenses.

there is a really good site for you to go to which will answer your questions better than individuals, I have placed a child for adoption, and I can tell you that a lot of families met the requirements but since I got to pick out the parents I had my own requirements that were individual to me and what I wanted in prospective parents. Will you be going through an agency or a private attorney, the costs will vary depending on several factors. The regular agency or attorney fees, the housing allowance, food allowance, clothing allowance, medical costs for the birth mother etc. It can cost upwards from $10,000 (low) $20,000 (average) to higher.

it really depends on where you live and on what you want. Where I live, if you go through the local child welfare/protection agency, there is no cost, but you are more likely to receive a child that has been neglected, abused, has developmental delays, drug withdrawals, fetal alcohol syndrome; THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE CHILD IS ANY LESS VALUABLE, ONLY THAT YOU WILL HAVE OTHER ISSUES TO ADAPT TO. If you want an older child and a boy, it will go much quicker that if you're waiting for a child under 3, especially a girl. Friends of mine adopted a 3 year old boy a couple years ago, they said they were told that the kids in care are 80% boys - 20% girls.

Private adoption on the other hand can cost $40,000 or more.

General requirements: clear criminal backgrounds, good results from a home study (ie. showing that your home is clean, adequate space for a child, show that you have some parenting skills, have been around kids before, are not deeply in debt, marriage is stable ect.)

these are few of the requirements of the agency i used:

Married a minimum of 3 years at the time of application
An established pattern of infertility or inability to carry a pregnancy to term
High school graduates
At least 25 years of age and one of whom is no more than 40 years of age at the time of application
No more than 1 other child in the home (At times this has been waived to allow for placement of a 3rd child into a family)

they also required full income background including savings, life insurance policy, debt, yearly income, etc.

Oh hun, that is a whole book right there. Depends on where you live, MOST importantly the country you adopt from, your family situation, criminal background, classes, social workers in your home to evaluate you, corrupt gov'ts, bending over backwards, a lot of money, lawyers.

Basically, it's in your best interest to contact and adoption lawyer or agency that is renowned. Don't go through some small company no one has ever heard of. I'm sure some ladies would be happy to give you answers on agencies.

Good luck, my neighbor went through the process for over a year with Guatemala (a lot of babies come out of there) finally got her son at 9 months old but it took almost 2 years.
