What do u think about The whole madonna adoption issue?

Madonna scares me. I think that international adoption is controversial enough without celebrities using their millions and their reputations to get children the fast and easy way. It does a disservice to all other parents who want to a child and follow the law to form their family. I also think it makes Westerners look bad in the eyes of all developing countries. She's basically saying through her actions "I don't care what your laws are, I think they are stupid and you must accommodate to my ideas of right and wrong". This is why Americans have a hard time traveling, because of a few culturally insensitive people who use their morals to judge other cultures. Sure, I think if there's an appropriate and loving home for a child who will otherwise live in extreme poverty it should be allowed but Malawi has its own way of doing things. I've heard Madonna talking about her experience with adoption in the David Letterman show (I love that show) and she does sound completely self-absorbed. I don't think adoptive parents go around life saying "I saved this child's life, I wanted to help, I am being charitable". I think they say "We found him/her and fell in love, this is our family not a charity". I think Madonna should stop collecting kids and recording albums. She's scary and it's also scary I'm so involved on this topic. Scary.

Why should a person give someone money to raise their child? If she could offer a child a better life than they are having, she should have been able to adopt them. I'm no Madonna fan but that would have been one more child out of poverty.

For people that keep saying "donate money", do you know how much aid has been donated to third world countries over the years? Their problems just keep getting worse. Sometimes throwing money at a problem does not solve it.

I agree 100% with you. She is not saving a child. This is all about publicity. Nothing more.

Sure, she's bending the law, but come on, we all know if she gets this child, the child is going to have the best life she can get. Even if she spends a lot of time with a nanny, she's still going to get the best (private) education, food, luxuries, clothes and care. Even if she is bending the law, It's a lot better than the child staying in that country where all her needs aren't met and she'd have a terrible time in poverty.

I'm just saying it how it is.

I think her 15 minutes of fame have gone on about 25 years too long and she gets far too much tabloid ink with everything she does.

Apparently she is quoted as saying, "I love that baby girl.She's my little girl, she needs to be with me"

What I find strange about this situation is that she was refused because she doesn't fulfil the 18 month residency period.

The very obvious way of getting around that is to fulfil the residency requirement! Go and live there with the child like your supposed to.

Why isn't she doing this?

Apparently she already feels like this is "her baby", and I have a son and if someone had told be that I had to live in Malawi with him for 18 months before I could take him home I would do it in a heartbeat.

Yeah I agree I don't think taking kids from Africa is the best way to go about helping things. Especially as there's evidence they do have families who want them. Much better to try and help lots of kids in the whole community than take some away from their culture.

I think the other thing that really is awful is she doesn't have to follow any of the same rules as someone else adopting from Darfur has to. She just walks in and picks a kid and leaves. Seems kind of cold and just so easy for her.

Even if this child gets a "better life" with a rich pop singer, that still means she is being taken away from her family, probably forever. Having the best education, luxuries, and everything else she would possibly want doesn't necessarly mean she will grow up to be a happy well adjusted adult. There are plenty of people who grew up that way and are miserable individuals who only live for parties and drugs.
