What do you think about Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali being attempted to put up for adoption?

by her father?

Here's the summary of the news:
Rafiq Qureshi, the father of Rubina Ali,who played the young Latika in Slumdog Millionaire, told reporters posing as a wealthy Dubai family that he was planning to put up his daughter for adoption for 20 million rupees to help her escape from the slums. He said that Rubina is an Oscar child and that she needed a comfortable life.

Should this type of adoption be allowed in the world for the sake of money, especially if you come from a poor neighbourhood like Mumbai's slums?

well. as usual, Danny Boyle will be pulled in again in this issue again,,, about how he failed to satisfy the necessities and wants of the children whom acted in Slumdog.
and again, ppl will say again that all have them have done the best in goodwill of children,- and later on they will pull in about corrupt govt officials whom stole money from the sum to be given the poor families...
simply... it just seems just like another made up story to get the attention from the directors of the movie,
to give them more and more money... if the above issue is found true...,,
it would just have an indirect effect of foreign directors not wanting to employ this child actors from india bcos there is an infinite greed and selfishness and all the stuff...
I just hope the father isnt so bad to go and sell off his daughter..

Having lived in India it doesn't surprise me one bit. And I'm not talking about a parents love or lack of love for their child. I'm more refering to the levels of poverty. There is a growing upper class in the Country, a HUGE lower class and a very slowly emerging middle class there and most people don't have a chance to move from one level to another. Of course things like this shouldn't be allowed. It's illegal even by Indian standards and is the main reason why there are controls over international adoptions.

its a hard one, i read the story on it today and allthe comments left and one comment stuck out, in india they have to pay doweries to get there daughters married, her father would now be expected to pay a huge dowery for her to ever get married because she is a star. in his culture this seems like an impossible thing. so i dont hate the father.

but i wish children couldnt be bought and sold like this.

This isn't putting the girl up for adoption, is human trafficking. It happens to thousands of men, women and children every year and the media never finds it newsworthy, we need a movie and a famous child to care about a crime. This is not the same as adoption, regardless of what your views are (and I can see a lot of people equate adoption to a crime) human trafficking is in another level of inhumane acts.

I'm holding off opinion until more news stories come out. I've heard that he denied these allegations

Edit to add:
Father denies Slumdog child sale

BBC is a better source than News of the World :)

The main question is, why is she still in the slums? Let me remind you that I am talking of a place where the air is polluted severely, there is no protection, and there is barely any sanitation.
All the children in the movie were special and Rubina is one of them. However, unlike most, Rubina played a major role in this movie, explaining why she needed to show up at the Oscar's as they received the awards.
My point is She needs to be compensated for her acting and fame that she carried out and brought to the movie. She should not be compensated just because she is poor but because among 1,500 kids she was chosen to a movie, a movie with great success.
As for her father what can one say? The man is poor, he is poverty stricken. His daughter gets a role in a movie, it strikes big, he wants cash. I mean poverty has psychologically driven him to think this way. It is wrong trying to adopt the child for cash, especially without knowing the names or background of the prospective parents. However, it can be justified.

You can't call it "being put up for adoption". He put his child up for sale.

I really wonder where Anil Kapoor is when you really need him...

It's either a case of spoiled children or spoiled parents. I hope to see more facts on the news.

If it's true- it's horrible and all of his children should be taken away from him.

But, I've heard other rumors saying it's not true, so I will not judge yet.

In all honesty it doesn't surprise me at all. She would probably be better off without him anyway. He obviously just cares about the money side of things more than wanting a better life for her. If he really wanted a better life for her she wouldn't be "up for sale" like an old used car.
