What do you think about adoption?

I recently posted a question that was supporting adoption. I was shocked at all the negative feedback i got. This is how I feel about adoption

I think if a mother is considering abortion or does not feel ready to be a parent, then they should consider adoption because there are 100s of people who cant have babies. My aunt and uncle are one of them, however i respect and Support whatever they decide. But i got a lot of negative comments on that...? How do you feel about it?
Additional Details
Like I said "I support WHATEVER a person decides." If a mother wants to abort her child i support her in that. And yes I understand what all of you are saying about " How its not your job to have babies for those who cant, blah blah blah, but that is NOT what im saying AT ALL. I support whatever you choose! I am NOT aginst abortion nor am i for it. Just getting an opinion:)

i feel that adoption is a new window of possibilities that is being opened toward children and parents.I feel that there is nothing wrong with it, and it's a big part of my life because me and my brother were both adopted. I really have to agree with you. i am not against it, but i am with it. There are so many babies who are in orphanages with no parents, in different states and countries. If people give adoption a chance, they will have the chance to know what it feels like to live and grow up with a parent and not be in an orphanage with all these other children. The subject may be hard to talk about between kids and parents, but it's important. So i think that adoption is a great and wonderful thing, and without it, the world wouldn't be as happy.
But i also feel adoption should be more directed toward children and babies who NEED a home, like when their parents died, or are abusive. My parents died and my mom did love me a lot. I feel that also it's a hard thing to do, giving up a baby that you love and gave birth to, but if you are not able to support that child with all the things that child needs that will help it grow into a blossoming person, i feel that adoption is a good thing to do.

People were not put here to fulfill other peoples dreams of being a parent.

As long as its done to give a child a family and not to give a couple a child.

Adoption was SUPPOSED to give children in NEED of a HOME that HOME, not give a couple the child they WANT. Its not a right to raise some one else's child, its a privilege that should not come at such a cost to others. Foster to adopt is great, Older children need families too.

My main issue is that a lot of mothers who feel they aren't ready to parent only feel that way because:

A) She doesn't think she can financially support the child and isn't told of the help (medicair/medicaid, WIC, etc) available to her
B) She doesn't think she is mature enough to be a parent and isn't told of the help (parenting classes, etc) available to her.
C) Someone in her family tells her she won't be able to care for her baby.
D) An adoption agency tells her that her baby will be better off in a wealthy, two-parent household or that her baby will have a "better life" with someone else.
E) She is scared and feels like she has no support.

Women should be talked *in* to keeping their child, not talked *out* of it.

Another issue I have is that, while being told you will never have children has to be an absolutely devastating thing to hear, it is not someone else's responsibility to provide you with a child. Giving your child to someone else to raise also has to be absolutely devastating to do.

That being said, I have no problem with adoption from foster care. I think it's sad that it needs to exist but I'm glad it does for the children who suffer abuse and neglect at the hands of their parents.

Of course I want NEEDY children to get families.

The problem comes in when agencies get involved. Babies are bought and sold like Prada handbags. That's not right.

It's not right to assume a young, uneducated mother is incapable of ever parenting her child. The first thing should be to support her, not take her baby.

If you really want to understand adoption, it is important to understand the history of the practice. Here is a link to a university archive with extensive historical records on adoption practice and history:

http://www.uoregon.edu/~adoption/

Adoption was never really all benevolent. It always served darker purposes. In the earliest days of the 19th century "social reforms" homeless children were seen as future criminals as well as victims. The populace was warned that these children were the 'dangerous classes". Adoption was seen as a way to protect society.

Not so different from the way that some children are viewed today.

I think the same as you hun. I have two brothers which are adopted. And they are the one of the best desicions my mother made ! :) . It was quite a long process but it was fine lol . My 14 year old brother was adopted by my mother and father at the age of 8 and my 16 year old brother was adopted at 13.
