What do you think of these stats?

The below was published in 10/08 by Evan Donaldson institute and based on over 360 natural surrendering parents:

How open is your adoption (asked to natural parents):

Asked at 3-6 months: Closed: 3.6% Semi-open: 26.8% Open: 52.5% Very Open: 16.8

Asked at 18 months: Closed:1.9% Semi-open: 30.5% Open: 57.7% Very Open: 10%

How Satisfied are you with the level of openness:
Asked at 3-6 months Asked at 18 months

Very Dissatisfied 3.1% 3.4%

Somewhat dissatisfied 3.6% 7.5%

Somewhat satisfied 19.6% 21.2%

Very Satisfied 73.5% 67.9%

Basically Less than 2% are closed at 18 months after surrendering.

The study acknowledged that not much had been done as far as studying the realities of open adoption and extends out several years (I believe 10) so this is the data they have. If you have a verifiable study that says otherwise instead of "just your opinion," please post it and I'd love to read it. This is a third party study and not something meant as a malicious question, so why the venom?

I think its interesting that there were fewer closed adoptions as time passed. Its unfortunate that better statistics havent been kept over the years (but that happens with everything). Will be very interesting a few years down the road to see what they say.

How was the sample arrived at? Is it random? Is it representative? Without that sort of information, these numbers are meaningless. (I could have easily interviewed 3,000 people who would have all said they were going to vote for John McCain just before the election. But it wouldn't have been useful in drawing any conclusions.)

Further, nothing in this study indicates that open adoptions are legally enforceable. So I'm not sure how this is relevant to anything.

How about 3 years down the road......or 4 years......or five years......or 18 years? How about life?

The stats are crap. Another marketing tool.

My main question is in regards to the term "open." How is it defined? Open adoptions range from a photo once in a blue moon to a truly integrated family relationship. I think lumping all so-called "open" adoptions into one study to determine the level of satisfaction is flawed.

Hopefully the researchers took this into consideration and defined open adoption more thoroughly. Do you have link to this study?

I think 360 is too narrow of a study. A broader study would give a real insight into what's happening out there.

I think it is the same type of stats drug makers use when promoting there product and when they find out about the real side effects some body has already died or has had a heart attack.
