And we still can't admit we have a problem supporting parents, children and families in this country!?
What needs to happen here? If this is how people feel in Nebraska, what is going on in the rest of the country? Why do people feel that it is not important to offer support for families?!

No, this doesn't surprise me. I am shocked at the lack of compassion in this supposedly Christian Country. It seems that we here in the US are more concerned with insuring that "God" remains on our currency and in our classrooms than in our daily lives in the way we treat others.
These children could be taken away from this mother and they could be placed in foster care. If they were adopted by strangers, there would be almost limitless amounts of adoption welfare available to these strangers, but little or nothing for the mother. Apparently, almost all of the older children who have been released here are children with serious mental health issues, and parents who are desperate for assistance that just isn't available. The mental health care in this country, which was really making great strides until the Regan administration began to dismantle it and nothing has been done to stop the decline since, has deteriorated to an abysmal state, all in the name of saving taxpayer money courtesy of the politicians. Since there is no help available, it has become either a police problem or, as in this case, a social service problem. Both options are much more expensive than treating the conditions that cause the problems, but that would mean helping people and that is welfare and we don't do that...way too close to socialism, a courtesy we only grant to our largest corporations. Now it seems to have become a Nebraska problem.
To expect a schizophrenic or someone suffering from BPD or OCD to be totally responsible themselves is absurd, and their families need help and financial assistance, at least a portion of the amount that would be spent if they were adopted by strangers. Adoption welfare is substantial in all states, though the criteria varies by state. If a portion of these funds were given to families to assist them, or some help of some sort, these desperate people would not be taking their teens to dump them.
This characterizes more than anything I have seen the utter resoucelessness of women who are surrendering. It is not people who are offered options. It is desperate, frightened, exhausted people.
An interesting side story to this...last week an 18 year old adopted girl was dumped. The adoption welfare had run out on her, and she was no longer a money maker. So, to the dump she goes. So much for the Forever Family.
Has a baby safe haven in Nebraska taken in one infant? I don't think so... |

I want to say this surprises me, but it doesn't. Resources for families are at an all time low, resources for families with problem teens are almost non-existent.
While the situation in Canada appears to be a bit better it is not as far off as many would like to think. In my city we have a youth psychiatric hospital, a youth shelter, a crisis nursery that will often find help for parents of teens, numerous family resource centres, a juvenile detention centre, numerous youth drop in centres, numerous alternative schools and special police constables in every high school and most jr. high's. There is still far more demand than they can all keep up with. We can all sit here and blame bad parenting, societal woes, lack of morals and values, tv, internet and video games until the cows come home but there will still be a staggering demand for youth treatment options.
I don't know where the answer lies, if I did I would take in an army of at risk youths and children. This is a problem that will continue to spiral out of control until each and every one of us admits that there is a problem and becomes part of the solution. |

when i heard this i was shocked... i cant believe it..i mean i'm a new mom and i wont be able to sleep if my daughter is not with me even a day. My life has changed dramatically when i had her that make me a better person. I think i need her more than she needs me. I just hoping this people come to their senses and get their kids back. i was hurt to hear this up to now knowing your own mom and dad gave on you. No matter what life brings i will always be there for my baby.. like i said before having a baby (her) is an opportunity not a task. |

Another story i read this morning: Death of abused toddler triggers UK political row.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html
Social workers wanted to preserve the family inspite of red flags.
Makes me cry just thinking that these babies could have been saved if taken away from this heartless woman who doesn't deserve to be called a mother. |
