What do you think the length of time between adoptions should be?

In my province you need to wait 18 months before you can pursue another adoption.
In terms of attachment and ensuring a child feels safe and secure in their new environment... Do you think that's too short... too long... just right?
Do you think the timeline should be different between domestic and international?
There was an interesting debate about this today on my agency forum, so I'm curious what others think.

Alberta is 9 months because its been ruled that they can't discriminate. If parents can have a biological child every 9 months so can an adoptive parent.
I know parents here who have adopted 7 months apart too but thats through the foster to adopt program so perhaps the need was there for placements. I really don't think it needs to be different for adoptive parents then for natural parents. If one group can do it there is no reason why the other can't.
With that being said though, I can see where it would also depend upon the needs of the child. Our last adoption was of a 5 month old who came to us at 4 days old so it's not as though there were multiple placements but disabilities and issues may dictate a longer time between adoptions. |

I would say atleast 2-3 years. That way the first child you adopted can get used to the new environment & that way you can spend you time soley on the new member of the family. Then at about 2-3 they will be more comfortable Then you could adopt a second child. Then you could spend your time on the 2nd (& of course the 1st child) to make sure they can be comfortable & the 1st child maybe more understanding when you can't be with them every minute...where as if you got a child a year after the first child they may not be so understanding they are getting used to the situation them selves..So all in all i don't think thats enough time:) |

In my state (when adopting through foster care) the length of time is 12 months, however, they take each case on an individual basis, so it is possible to adopt soon with good reason, like adopting a sibling, an older child, etc. I think 12 months is adequate. I think in some cases with certain children it's best to wait longer, but I think in others 12 months may be long enough. |

From what I know its 2yrs in Aust system. Ours are closer together only because our children are biological siblings. The second time we weren't even in the adoption pool when we were approached by social services. (BTW-we knew nothing about her sister until then, she had been in foster care since birth....relinquishment papers had been signed and past the 30 days when they called us...it was either we said yes, or they were separated- take your pick.) But we still had to be reassessed etc.
Edit-do people prefer bio siblings to be separated? you learn something new everyday... (Just telling the asker how it happened.) |
