What i the correct term for someone that was adopted?
|
We have had many discussions on appropriate terms to call First parents and Adoptive parents, but I have not seen one regarding the proper term when refering to someone that was adopted. I generally use adoptee, but it seems disrespectful...
As a person that was adopted, what doyou prefer?

God's little gift who was put in the wrong tummy?
ROTFL Ok seriously.
Adoptee, if one needs to make that distinction, but otherwise, adoptlet or adoptling is fine with me. I'm easily amused. |

I prefer chosen child. LOL.
Adoptee shows the powerlessness of the position, which is perfect, because no on would choose to be adopted. |

Me = adoptee. (Aussie variety!!!)
The NCFA don't like it.
That makes me like it even more!!
And for the record - I hated being told I was 'special' or 'chosen' because I was adopted - it just flew in the face of being 'given' away by my bio family.
If I was so 'special' - one would think I would have been kept.
Such messages screw with a child's brain.
Every child IS 'special' - but adoptees get told that in relation only to their adoptee-ness. (I think I just created a new word!!)
They also get told they should be 'grateful' for their life because they are adopted.
Again - misconceptions that need to die.
Thanks for asking. |

Lillie: "God's little gift who was put in the wrong tummy?"
ROFLOL. @@
Heather: You know, when I told my mom that I wanted to buy The Language of Blood and told her it was about "a Korean adoptee who returned to Korea", I had this brief flash of feeling uncomfortable - like I had just labelled a person as an object rather than a human being.
I don't know, I find that weird. I have no problem typing out "adoptee" online but in real life, it nags at me - that's SO odd. In real life I really prefer "adopted person." |

I call my son: son, child
He calls me: Mommy, Mom
I guess you could label someone as an "adoptee" (like we do "adoptive parents"), if you want... for informational purposes like in these forums...
but that's it.

Why do we need special terms? I've always been referred to as "Son" by my "Parents". I don't understand all the drama with being adopted? I have never not known that I was adopted - meaning, I never got the 'movie of the week' bomb dropped on me "Son,...you're adopted", resulting in a drinking binge and subsequent DUI. For all the parents out there, tell your kids early, and avoid all this drama.
To the person above me, I absolutely agree - "adopted" is perfectly fine. |

most people don't come up to me and ask if I was adopted...but that is what I guess sounds best. "she was adopted, she is adopted, were you adopted?"
That is what I prefer.
EDIT: I agree with the person below me...I don't get all the drama surrounding adoption. I am certainly happy with my life to this day, and very glad my biological mother was so unselfish. |
