What is the best way to raise money for an adoption?
|
My wife and I have been trying to get pregnant for almost 5 years now and because of her PCOS it has been very difficult and costly already. We have been looking at domestic adoption but to go through an agency (which is our best shot for an infant) is very expensive. Our credit is not very good and so we have not been able to get a loan. I am not sure if there are grants out there or not. We both get assitance from work but that comes after the adoption is finalized. We really just the help to get through the initial fees associated with the process (home study, etc.) Just wondering if anyone has had any success with getting grants or has other fund raising ideas?

It doesn't cost a fortune to adopt from the thousands of deserving children waiting and needing homes, just contact your Department of Social Services to run you through it |

Just a suggestion, have your considered foster care? There are many children in the foster care system that are looking for homes. Also are you only looking at infant adoption? I ask this because there are toddlers that are waiting for adoption too. Is there a higher risk with adopting a child over an infant, well maybe with attachment issues. But I believe that is something that can be worked through as a family. As long as yuo re-assure the child of your love for them, it will go along way. |

Well, first and foremost you need to act on how you, your wife, and your family feels. If you have the time and are comfortable with it, you could have a fundraiser. Though make sure you are putting plenty of effort in on your part so to keep people from thinking you are doing it for personal gain. Prioritize how you spend your money and time: skip a few movie nights, cut some vacations, and spend that time organizing a garage sale or you could even consider getting an extra/part-time job. Hope this helps. |

I am not sure of the ethics of raising money to adopt. Some people give their children up for adoption because they do not have the money to raise them, so if I were giving money I would maybe give it to a birth family to get the help they need? just a thought....adoption is for the children not the other way around.
My husband and I also did fertility and such and decided on adoption, but have decided to go with "older" children (3,4,5), in need of a family. I think the competitiveness for infants is frightening.
But if you decided to just "raise the money for home study etc" the best bet woud be to save up and start the process a bit later.
Good luck though, either way. |

Your best bet might be to adopt an older child. The state of NY actually pays people to adopt children out of foster care- you might want to look into that. You do not need to live in the state of NY to do so.
The only other suggestion would be to check with your employer and see if they offer adoption assistance. I know that a friend of mine received $5k from her husband's employer to help with costs.
You also might want to consider international adoption, I'm not sure if it's much cheaper, but the wait won't be as long. |

Sunny- This is directed at you. To adopt a child costs around $13,000, this is not a small amount of money. When you adopt, you have to prove you are financially able to pay for the child, did someone make you give them your tax returns and prove that you were financially able to pay for the child you had. Did you have to go through a back ground check to have your child. Did you have to give 4 reference names and addresses of people who know you and have them fill out the form and send it back on your behalf before you were able to have a child. No, you were just able to get knocked up and have a child when you couldn't afford it. Maybe someone should have stepped in and said you are not worthy to have a child. You need to walk a day in someone elses shoes who can't have a child themselves before you preach about why they shouldn't have one. My husband and I make $150,000 a year, have awesome credit but we can't have a child.
Now to answer the question, contact Catholic Social Services or Lutheran Social Services and dependent on your income they may reduce the fee. You do need to get your credit worked and and start fixing whatever is wrong with it. There aren't any grants that I know of out there. |

The real question is how public are you willing to put your adoption?
It's a lot easier to raise money for an adoption (done it twice) if you're willing to face the public and explain why you want to do this.
All it really takes is commitment.
If you have a church, go there and ask for people to donate to a garage sale for raising the funds for the adoption.
Another option is to better check where you will be adopting through. In my state, there's an organization which specializes in the adoption of children with special needs. This can be very encompassing. They actually team up with the state to actually pay for most of the process for doing the adoption. Something to consider.... |

You realize, of course, that the assistance from work often doesn't materialize until almost a year after you take custody of the child.
You are likely to have some difficulty with the home study and the initial paperwork. If you can't afford the costs of the adoption, how can you afford the costs of having a child, often including over $1,300 per month for daycare?
I wish you the best of luck. I hope that everything works out for you. Just please make sure that you aren't going to put yourself into debt, especially if it affects the child. |
