What is your opinion on atheists adopting ?

For me, I think it's SO nice that children can be raised to be rational tolerant !

Most atheist parents allow their kids to choose their own beliefs and that's just swell IMO.

My approval rating of atheists adopting is one hundred (100) percent !

how bouts you ???

I don't care who's doing the adopting. Adoption isn't about the adults. It's about the child. The purpose is to find loving, stable homes for kids who need them. Not to find kids for adults (of any religious persuasion) who want them. As long as the adults are unconditionally accepting of the child, and the AP's are aware of the significant losses inherent in adoption, and as long as the child was separated from his/her parents for GOOD reason (i.e. abuse/neglect), I don't care.

I have no issue with athiests or religious people adopting. However I have issues with extremists adopting. You, it seems, have gone from one extreme to the other, your avatar says it all. I would be very concerned that if you adopted, you would be shoving 'anti-christian' (or whatever religion you choose to hate) down your children's throats.

What ever floats yer boat. As long as the children are cared for properly and loved unconditionally.

it shouldnt matter what the parents believe (or dont believe) as long as this is not forced on the child and if they choose to belong to a religion then it would be allowed.

Super Mom's Son
I agree with you.

I am a Christian, but my parents are atheists. They did not raise me to be Christian, but I felt comfort in it and they always supported me. If anyone can give a child a loving, educational, fulfilling home, then we should not discriminate based on religion.

Of course it's good. For a child to be raised in a tolerant and loving environment, rather than a punitive one of shame, is better for the child, better for the world.

yeah it would be nice not to have an entire family forcing their beliefs down your throat

I think religious choices, including whether to practice a religion or to be atheists, are the family's decisions to make, and should not affect adoption.

As long as the family is able to take good care of the children-- which is not dependent on their religious beliefs-- whether they choose to practice a faith, or which they choose to practice if so, should not be an issue for anyone but themselves.

I do think it's important for the family to teach and practice tolerance, including but not limited to religious tolerance, regardless of their own beliefs.

100% for it

truthfully im probably more for it than religious adoption because this way the children can amke their own decisions and don't feel forced into a way of life

I am against adoption in general, but as an atheist myself, I do not think atheist should be discriminated against.

My opinion is that religion has very little to do with parenting.

The more kind and loving people adopting thru foster care the better.

I would not support any discrimination against any religious group or group with no religion for adopting children so long as the group's views would not pose a relatively immediate threat to a child placed with them (cannibals?).

However, I do think that if you consider your (religious) beliefs to be true and important, the only reasonable view is to think that a child is better off to be adopted by parents who would expose them to your own religion.

The reason you should still not be trying to prevent those with other beliefs from adopting is that the only way to assure safe practice of your own religion is to allow religious freedom for all.

Discriminating against others for having different religions than your own would cause worse problems for those of your own religion in the long run.

Crucio
I think anyone who would provide a good home and be good parent(s) to a child should be able to adopt. Ones religion should be irrelevant JL is right you find intolerable people in every single group there are intolerable atheists and religious people etc. That said obviously a child should not be placed with atheists if it was the wish/desire of their biological parents to be placed with in a religious family. Then again a child should not be placed with a religious family if it was the bioparents wish/desried the child be placed in an atheist family.

seriously some so called "godly" people are the worse parents in the world. i'm not a strong believer that being able to recite bible verses,by memory, and interject God into every conversation makes one a better parent. some of the best parents I know are very good people who raise good kids, yet are not religious. afterall, some of histories worse atrocities were in the name of God, Allah, et al

ETA; i'm actually not a huge fan of adoption (other than foster) anyway. it's way too coercive.

Just fine. Good luck with that though, the market is dominated with agencies hellbent on christianizing all potential adoptlings

I don't support adoption in general so I would be against it unless it was from foster care. In that case I say go for it.

Interesting. I am of a similar mind to Gershom. I am generally against adoption at all. I do support children in foster care, who have NO hope of returning to their natural parents, being taken into a home permanently and raised with love. My first choice wouldn't be adoption, even in that case, but that's "what they do" ('they' being public social service agencies) so I'm fine with it because it's good for the kids (I'm only good with it WHEN it's good for the kids).

As far as atheists go, great. Wonderful. Whatever. Religion/beliefs etc. are totally irrelevant to me -- other peoples' anyway. I have mine. They're good for me. Adoption and Religion are non-intersecting dialogues in my world.

Thanks for asking! Cheers!
