you don't win. oh when, i got it now. i was 21 when i had my first foster child. i was married to a navy man. we did foster parenting for 17 years in several states. most the time i did it alone because he was out to sea. i adopted on of the foster kids. i have 4 kids i gave birth to and him=5. one of the dumbest statements i hear is all they need is for someone to love them. it takes alot more than that. i did special needs kids, pregnant teens, teens with babies, etc. it can be rewarding yes, but also draining. have a support system with others who know what it's like

Totally agree that love is not enough!! You must love from that place that gives to the unlovable. These children are hurting and hurting people are messy! Messy emotionally, messy developmentally....you name it they can mess it up. It is a thankless, lonley job but it is the most important work you will ever do.

You have to boldly lead and parent these children. Mine took kindness as a weakness and thought that a weak person cannot be trusted to care for them.

When we became a bold, fair, firm, LEADER they responed and trusted us...but it took literally years. Be patient, kind (especially to yourself), fearless, tolerant and flexible.

That is the best advice I can give,

Bruce and Rhonda

The first time, I didn't have any. I had only been married for 8 months before we applied and within 4 months we had our daughter.

This last time, I still didn't have any special knowledge or experience other then being a father for 15 years. This last time it took 4 1/2 months.

OMGosh how true the above post is! "All they need is Love!" Ha ha ha! Not exactly!

My expereince was the fact I was a young mom--who had managed to take the right steps to end an abusive marriage while protecting and meeting the needs of my children...

My oldest bio child had a terrible accident at age 9 and required years of therapy and surgeries...

When we decided to adopt the history of our lives and how we managed under difficult situations added to our expereince and demonstrated we were Not the type who would just give up if things got hard down the road.

I have an early childhood education degree, sable relationship, and many years of experience with children.
