What school districts in Michigan have granted adoption leave as as paid leave equal to maternity leave?

I am looking for specific districts that pay leave for both equally as an example for the superintendent.

Will you give the money to the child's mother, who is recovering from the delivery?
I'm confused, why do you need to stay at home? Aren't you going to dump that newborn into full-time daycare anyway...
Call the teacher's union, That's what they get paid for. |

look up the FMLA laws. its the 'family medical leave act' and it is federally governed.
adoption is covered but i cant swear by if any pay is involved. you will get the same amount of time off, aprox. 6 weeks and the fathers are eligible too.
you may even be able to look under the michigan.gov website. that has just about everything. as far as i know, maternity or adoption is not govened by any specific school district or any other geographic location. |

Paid maternity leave? Hahahahahahaha what kind of dream world are you living in?
Very few employers actually PAY a woman to take maternity leave. Most women use short-term disability to cover a scant 6 weeks leave at a rate of 3/4 their usual pay. (The short term disability is for recovery after birth). If the company isn't large enough, they don't even have to offer THAT. So if anyone is actually getting paid maternity leave, consider yourself lucky.
Now most people are entitled to take leave, unpaid, either for maternity or adoption, but you'll have to either save up for it or figure out how to pay the bills without that income coming in. |

I'm not sure it would be deemed necessary to have equal leave given the fact that there is no birth to recover from.
I'm sure there would be leave albeit unpaid as with fathers leave |

I do not have an answer to your specific question as I live in California and was not able to find this online. (I suspect if any school districts do this, they do not want to or have no reason to publicize it.) Maybe what I know about California would help, though.
Here we actually do have paid parental leave, which does apply equally to parents of children born to them as well as to adoptive parents. This didn't apply to me, however, as I work for a city library and government employees aren't covered by State Disability, under which this program falls. A lot of teachers aren't covered either. Still, adoptive parents get the same leave as "born to" parents.
Adoptive parents also get the same leave under FMLA, but of course that is unpaid unless you use sick pay or vacation pay. And I believe employers do not have to let you use sick pay for FMLA unless you are actually ill.
The place where the leave is different for adoptive parents is in terms of actual maternity disability benefits. California provides State Disability payments (again, except for to government employees) to women who are >disabled< from work by pregnancy. Adoptive moms obviously wouldn't get that leave -- or need it.
Women who give birth also qualify for fairly automatic disability payments after the birth (again, if they are covered). It doesn't last that long though -- just a few weeks, I think. And again, this would not cover adoptive parents.
Adoptive parents generally get about the same leave as fathers, so you could look things up or ask about them that way. Fathers and adoptive parents don't have to worry about pregnancy, labor, or C-sections, etc. Try looking up or asking about "Parental Leave" or "Paternity Leave." |

it wouldn't be under adoption or maternity leave, it would be family leave. all the school districts would have it.. |

I'm not aware of any school districts at the elementary/middle/high school level that do. If I find out about any, I will update my answer. (Was born and raised in Michigan...have lots of friends/family who currently teach in Michigan.)
{removed link about paid leave at university level, b/c I suspect it might be out of date}
(Obviously if you qualify for FMLA, then you would be able to take unpaid leave. But you only asked about paid leave...) |
