When people adopt a baby, will social workers check on them and the child forever?
|
I'm sorry if this is a really obvious question. (I'm not adopting children, I'm actually 38 weeks pregnant, but I'm just curious.) When people are prospective adoptive parents, they go through tons of screening and a home study right? Well, what about when the baby or child is placed with them- will a social worker still come and see how they are getting along and how the baby is being cared for- check on their home and the baby and them and ask questions, or is it pretty much like, "you're all done, see ya!"? If they are continued to be "checked on", for how long?
I was just wondering. :)

In our situation we adopted siblings. The transitioned into our home and we Did have monthly visits with the Children's Caseworker as well as several visits with the children's CASA.
The visits took place until the adoptions were finalized. However, in our situation one of our children had extraordinary needs that became very clear were NOT the usual so we maintained and have continued to maintain a very close relationship with DHS for the past 6 years.
In the usual situation once the adoption is final adoptive families have the exact same rights as biological parents and any involvement with Child Protection Services would be just the same as for any other family.
In our state there is Post Adoption Support specifically for the adoptive parents of former foster children. We have access to direct support for any issues that may come up at anytime down the line. This service is absolutely amazing and while not directly working with DHS the staff has a wealth of information and support.

Also, depending on the Special Needs of the children there are a variety of supports services our Children are entitled to access if needed. Most children adopted from Foster Care will keep State Medical or Medicaid until they become adults.
Basically, social services is there for Us to access for the needs of our children... But, once the child is adopted they can't be any more involved then WE request or they would be if there were reports of concern made about us. |

Sadly it's more of a "you're all done, see ya!" deal.
I wonder how many homicides of adopted children could have been prevented if there was better follow up. |

It depends on the type of adoption.
For our international adoptions (Russia), we had four post-adoption meetings with our social worker -- at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after each adoption was finalized. The social worker has to prepare a report which is translated and sent to the adoption authorities in Russia.
Different countries have different requirements. Some don't require any post-placement reports, and some require yearly reports until the child is 18. |

If the adoption is through a state agency and finalized in court that is all that is required. If it's a sub. adoption there is a form to complete once a year. That is if the home was licensed. |

Not after the adoption is final. |

No, not unless there's been a problem reported. |

No, they don't check on them forever. My daughter was adopted in Oct. '08 and the case worker only has to check on th child for 6 months. After that six months my daughter will legally be the adoptive parents not the agencies.
I hope I answered your question. |

When we received the signed adoption papers for our youngest the social worker actually called a few days later to see if we had everything we needed and to just touch base. Her words at the end of the conversation were along the lines of "Well, it's been a pleasure. Please feel free to call at any time if you have any questions but other then that good luck and I'm glad things worked out so well." With our first adoption we never even had a social worker. Once things are done, they tend to back off and leave you to your lives. |

Nope. I believe a year or so after the adoption is complete and the child is with the new family, the social workers will notice that everything is fine and leave the family alone.
Now, if there is a complaint, they can take the child away. |

Sadly, no...and when problems begin the children are vulnerable and there is no one who can save them.
Actually, most anyone can "pass" a home study... |

no,my brother was adopted. He is now 35.You can do an open adoption to be sent pictures etc if both parties agree. But,normally it's just let the couple have the child and bond.
We picked my brother up from a church the nuns gave him to us in cardboard box ..(back in that day he didn't even ride in car seat home.
I believe my mom and dad knew he was from two teenagers...and no one has been in contact since i think they visited our home once to see how he was getting along...my mom ended up getting pregnant when they called to say they had a child for us..and there is six mon between my two brothers. |
