When put up for adoption, do you choose your parents?

Hi, my mother recently died, and i dont like my family at all, and my dad has said he might give me up for adoption. I was wondering, if you could choose not to go with certain parents, or have any say in your adoptive parents at all? what is the process? I'm 14 btw. And if i do feel like this is the best, because i've never really had a good loving family, and i'd like to know what that is like.

I am sorry for your loss. My mother died when I was 14, also. I am also sorry that your father is (seems to me, anyway) a lousy parent. If your dad gives you up, you'll probably end up in a foster home or a group home. The people you live with will not adopt you. If anyone offers to do so and you don't like them, you can refuse, I believe. Just remember that you might get switched around to different homes and you might not be able to keep many belongings. Good luck.

im not sure what the law is now, and i dont want to give you false info, but when my mom died when i was 5 my biological aunt and uncle (whom i loved) wanted to adopt me and could not. i hope everything works out for you.please check w/ local legal councel(free consult).

Poor thing.

I am going to be brutally honest with you.

If your dad surrenders you into foster care, you will more than likely remain there until you are 18 years of age and then you will have to leave and be out on your own.

Although older children adoptions do happen, it is rare being that everyone wants toddlers and babies.HOPEFULLY that is resolved someday.

Sorry for your loss and this fork in your path.

I am so sorry for your loss.Yes it is possible! My family does Foster Care and we are currently in the process of adopting the 12 year old girl that was placed with us. She asked if it was possible for us to adopt her. And yes you have a say in who you want to adopt you. If you don't like where you are staying you can ask to be moved to a different home.
I hope everything works out ok for you, and that this helped you in some way.

first, i can't imagine losing my mother- ever- let alone at 14. i am so sorry.....

at your age, a judge WILL listen to you. please, please make your thoughts, opinions and wishes VERY clear. don't be shy. a judge wants what is best for you. your feelings COUNT!

you go, you little independant thinker!!!!!!!!

When we adopted our daughter, the judged asked her if she wanted to be adopted by us. Usually, at your age, the adoption agency will choose the parents they feel can best raise you (they'll ask you about what kind of family you want), then you visit for a while to see if things will work out.

But at the age of 14, you'll probably wind up in foster care first and that might not work out very well for you. Yes, there are outstanding foster parents - but there are also some bad ones. The ones who take teens also take in troubled teens and you could end up with pretty rotten foster-siblings, too.

Wishing you lots of luck.

I cant work out if your question is a wind up or not - so i think I am going to treat it as not.....

1. Sorry for your loss it goes without saying that this must be a very tough time for you.

2. Your Dad is a tosser

3. What about your extended family - can they assist maybe your moms parents or sibling if they are still alive.

4. I think it likely you will go into fostercare which is not ideal

Good luck

Well my suggestion would be if you know of a loving family that you would want to be a part of ask them to adopt you. You would probably rather find a family and have a private adoption. You don't want to be in foster care. If you choose your on family you wouldn't have to go in foster care.

Love,
Michelle
