When you adopted, was it love at first sight?

When you adopted, was it love at first sight?

I may have even asked this before, but curious. I think I have shared that for two of my children it was for sure, but for one it took loads of time and work on both our parts. It was not the instant dream I had thought it would be and was not prepared for that part of it.

I know most won't admit it, but I guess I want to know, especially those who adopted older children if it was love at first sight, or if the real love came through getting to know the child?

All answers will be respected. Also wondering if anyone adopted had views (if they remember when they were adopted)

Merci.

It was more like fear at first sight when I met my kids. I was very overwhelmed by all the issues that had, just an hour previously, had been disclosed to us, including my future son's emotional state. They sorta bombarded us with the info and then whisked us over to the foster home for the first meeting. I think falling in love with them was gradual, as we built memories. To be honest, for the first few months, I felt like a big fake. Hard to believe that was three years ago! Now I can't imagine breathing without knowing where they are lol!

For our oldest it was for me but not for my wife. Oddly enough, for the youngest it was for my wife but it took some time for me.

Well it was but I tried to fight it. We fostered him and as a foster child there was always a chance he could go back to his bio parents or other family. We are foster to adopt and for me i tried to not fall head over heals. I caved in on the third day and just told myself that i would have to deal with it if he went back. Well PC has been taken and we are on track to adopt him

In short, yes.

We were called about a 5 year old girl to foster in 3/03. We were very excited -- went out and bought pretty bedroom furniture for her and everything -- and then we were told (before ever meeting her) that her grandfather had stepped up and taken her in. It was difficult for us but we were hopeful that things would work out for her with bio family. When I asked my husband to cancel the furniture order, he said, "Why? Let's just leave it until we get the next call." I told him no, that was too morbid for me and besides, the next call would be about a 2 year old boy. I just had a feeling.

In 6/03 DCFS called us again...this time about a 2-1/2 year old boy. I was excited...and kind of weirded out that I had 'predicted' it. When we met with both social workers and our son's SW showed us a picture of him, I cried. I was so happy to finally see this child we were going to foster and I knew I would love him. My husband wasn't as sure as I was until after we'd met our son. That first meeting was emotional and nerve-wracking, but there were a bunch of pictures taken that day and in all of them, we're grinning like idiots. :)

Proud AP!
You know before my son's mom picked us I had dreams of seeing his face and knowing that he was going to be my son. When we got the call that she had gone into labor and hauled but there I was so worried about seeing him and knowing or not it was him in my dreams. When he came out...yeppers...that was my baby. That was the little face that I had seen in my dreams just a week before. For me it was love at first sight. I had been waiting such a long time for him to get here that I could hardly contain myself. With him just being born meant that I loved him.

yes, it was an international adoption from China, she was Fourteen month's old when we saw her photo it was like we had lost our child and someone had found her for us. We could not stop looking at the photo, how could WE deserve such a beautiful girl?!

Mom of two
Yup, I was lost the second I saw both of my babies enter this world. I can not imagine my life without them. My family is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me.

My case is a little different. We're foster parents w/ intent to adopt, and they are my nieces, my half-sister's biological children.
I knew and saw them periodically before the situation at their home came to light, and even though we didn't see each other much, I did care about them and tried my best to dote on them, as much as I could through the poor relationship between my sister and I.

I can't say I loved them at first - at least not like I love my own daughter, but it developed very soon after. I think the initial hesitation was because of having such a bad relationship with my sister - for my husband, he said it was instant. Now just a few months out, I can't imagine not loving them and not being in their lives.

Not when I saw his picture. I thought, "That doesn't look like our kid."
When we met him, he immediately bonded with both of us, but especially with my husband. We all clicked right after that first meeting. My son is now like me in so many ways (for both good and bad) that I can't image a biological child would have been any different.

well for my dog it wasnt. she was being fostered at our friends house, so i just played around with her, but she was already "called for" (someone had already said they wanted her). we were looking for a dog at that time, but didnt even think of the possibility of getting her. the next day, our friend called us and said "the lady who was supposed to adopt the puppy cant anymore, so i told the shelter you guys would!" my parents were like O_O

and then my mom went to the shelter, signed the papers, and we took her home 3 days later! <3

shes been the best dog ever and we love her soooo much, and always will! <3
