Where do i even start?

i mean how do i go about finding my birth mother if i was adopted from south america?? i would love to meet her. i would love to know my heritage. there really is alot of things i want to know. this feeling is especially greater after i had my son.
i really don't have the financial means to go to south america. my mom is understanding with the way i feel but i can't ask her for help. she dosen't have the money either. we talk about my adoption and i do know a couple things. i know the last name i had before i came over to the states at 2 months. i was also adopted through a lawyer but he passed away a while back.
so i really have no idea how i could even go about it. i have actually wrote into the maury show once, that didn't work. LOL
any suggestions??

Start by getting all the "facts" from amom.
Which country/city, which agency, name of atty and look up who took over his practice.
Good news...when you do come across a little cash, it will move mountains in south america. Society in general is pro natural families and special interest groups are tiny or non existent in comparison to the US. It very rare that s.american women would place her child without being forced, tricked or manipulated by males.
I would suggest contacting Unicef and see if the can put you in touch with an NGO that could assist you or put you in touch with someone keeping track of what areas of the country the babies are coming from.
One of the many sad things with IA is that many kids are smuggled in and out of different countries so its hard to say where a child is really from. This is a big problem with kids from Guatemala. The pro adoption clan are shouting natural mothers are not showing up to claim their children because they don't care but the govt is starting to look into the reports that the children were kidnapped from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Mexico, thanks to pressure from Unicef. |

Depending on what country you were born in, there might be reunification programs. For example, with the children of "The Disappeared" of Argentina and other nations, there are efforts to reunite the stolen children with their families, such as organizations like "Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo" DNA databases are often used. In El Salvador, authorities are not cooperating. Many people who adopted stolen babies have NO idea that the children were stolen. This applies even to Guatamala today, where abduction of babies is rampant.
The lawyer's files may have been handed over to another lawfirm if they bought up his own. They may still exist.
Did your adoption take place in the U.S. or in that other country? There may be more details in the court or government files. Depending where you live, you may need to petition the court to get this information. Or an FOI request may be the way to do it, also depending on where the actual legal adoption took place.
Contact the embassy or consulate of the country you were born in and find more information Also, "google" for adoption reunion programs for that nation. You may find resources out there. |

If you know where in South America she was from, you could try searching for the governmental entity that handles adoptions there. They may have contact information through the internet. It's a long shot, but it might be worth the time. |

Was the lawyer part of a law partnership? If so, then maybe they will have records. |

You have to be 18. A good place to start is with the agency that assisted your adoptive parents. They will have records. |

It is understable that you would want to know your birth mother but it is no guarantee that after you do she will welcome you or that she will appreciate you finding her (it happens a lot). You should start out by asking your adopted mother, she has to have an idea of your origins because she dealt wih the dead lawyer. She has to know what country and city (at least) you came from. Depending on how long ago your lawyer died, his family or business partners may have the papers. Was this a legal adoption thru an agency then you should contact the agency. Otherwise google for sites that trace ancestries (you pay for) or pay a detective to do the work.. |
