Where should you start when you are trying to find your birth parents?

Additional Details
They are not helping in any way and have actually kept everything from this girl. Any other suggestions?

First - add details to the registries here
http://www.isrr.net/
http://registry.adoption.com/

Check here for information on state records -
http://adopteerights.net/
(click on the page marked 'Searchers' down the left hand side)

Check here for search help - and links to search angels -
http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

And check here for any support - it's the best online forum for adoptees I've found -
http://www.adultadoptees.org/

All the very best with the search.

Also - add extra info about the place of birth - and adoption of the person - and more people may be able to add info.

In what state were you adopted? That makes a difference as to what's available to you.

All adopted citizens in every state have the right to non-identifying information about their birth families. In some states, they also have the right to request and receive copies of their original birth certificates. This birth certificate will give you the name(s) of them birth parent(s.)

The first thing to do is order non-id and your original birth certificate (if you live in a state that gives adoptees their own birth certificates.)

Here are a couple of links regarding the laws and ordering non-identifying information and original birth certificates:

There is also a forum for adoptees that is quite helpful. It's at

If you are in the UK you are allowed to see your file on your adoption which will show where you where born and your mothers name. contact your local town hall and inquire as to where you can view your file.

Local social services dept should have all the info. you need. If you find the real birthmothers name the samaritans have a trace services for family members. Need to be very careful in such situations.

Do you know the name of the birth parents? Birthdate? City of birth? Were there any siblings? If you have any of this information, enter it at rootsweb.com .. or on craigslist.org .. or even as a question here .... just make sure you have a working email address that you check daily, and on rootsweb set it so you are notified of replies.

Best of wishes to you.

Sophie
