Which country are you allowed to choose the child you want to adopt?

is there a country where you can visit an orphanage, spend time with the children, and then adopt a child???

Yes. I'm not sure of all of them, though.

In Ukraine, you go to the orphanage and are presented with children, and are able to choose. However, most children available for adoption in Ukraine are 2+, and you don't know how many children you will have to choose from. It's required that you are allowed to choose from at least three, however, not all three have to meet you request (for instance if you request a 2-4 year old healthy boy, you will be presented with at least one 2-4 year old healthy boy. The others may match your request, but often times they will be boys OR girls, special needs, or older, etc)

In Kazakhstan, you can also choose. The amount of children you have to choose from depends upon the agency you use and the orphanage you are adopting from. Sometimes it will only be 2-3 children, sometimes it will be 20+.

Some countries, like China for instance and the US (if you're adopting a baby, in foster care you can choose!), don't allow you to choose.

ETA: ignore everyone else's snide remarks. I personally believe it's important to have a connection with a child. No, you shouldn't decide which child to adopt by looking out of a cataloge, but it IS nice to spend time with a child to make sure he/she is the right choice for your family.

No. You're thinking of a pet store.

Just a Mom
You can do it right here in the USA! Go to Walmart, waltz down the baby doll isle, look longingly at the Cabbage Patch dolls. Spend a little time with them to make sure you are picking the right one. Then hold that precious package in your arms all the way to the check-out isle and buy it.

Actually, you can do it in the US in the foster care system.

Older children usually WANT to meet with the potential family on several occasions before getting adopted. For example, if you look at the blurbs on adoptuskids.com, many of them say "Need to meet the family and spend time with before getting adopted"

As for babies/toddlers, probably won't happen. They are hot commodities and you have to take what you get.

No need to turn up, you can get the catalogue or order online from Baby R Us pick the one that you want and get it delivered free. It is the new environmental way of adoption saves on money too.

Can we get some prospective people?

This question is disturbing - I picked my cat that way No sane person should never ever even think of chosing a human in the same way.

Looney tunes - it is a human baby - commodity should not be used be in the same sentence.

Adoptees are human beings, not slaves, not toys, not comodities to be picked!!

I would hope not. Considering it can take years to adopt internationally I really don't see how you can go over, make your selection like you are choosing fruit and then come back when the paperwork is all done.

In our case, we were living in the foreign country at the time and it still took 5 to 6 months to get the paperwork all done so that we could have legal guardienship of our daughter. It was a few months after that when we had authorization to allow her to immigrate back home and then a bit longer to get the necessary visas. Thats a long time to be living overseas if you don't already.

You go through agencies in your home country and they work with the foreign agencies on your behalf. You will be presented with files and photos in most cases. I've heard of videos in a few select places but for the most part you get matched with a child and can review what ever file and photos they provide before committing.

As I understand it and as it played out in our case.

I am only familiar with China adoption and generally speaking, no you cannot visit the orphanage and choose a child. The CCAA matches you and then you travel to China to adopt the child. However, I have heard in some instances they allow that if you are doing volunteer work in the orphanages and in some cases if you are looking to adopt an older child (over the age 7).

I am adopted from China. You can't get to choose your child. They match you and send you a picture of the child unless you want a special needs child then you can choose. Though there are charities where you can volunteer for a couple of weeks to go over and work in the orphanages. China does have requirements when adopting a child like for examples you and your spouse must have a certain income, be a certain age, someone will come and meet you and see the house, and you must get recommendations from other people. Oh and if you adopt from China you will probably be getting a girl. Hope this helps you.
