Why are there so many babies from Asia up for adoption?

I was just wondering why there are so many babies in China and Korea up for adoption, is there something going on in their country? Also, why aren't Americans able to adopt them from birth, they adopt them when they are a few months old? I'm just curious I was watching "Bringing Home Baby" on TLC and there were a few episodes like that.

Like most other posters have said about China, the 1 child policy is what drives the high abandonment of girls. For the boys that are abandoned they have medical problems that are either too expensive to treat or are considered a bad omen.

Some minority groups are legally allowed to have more than 1 child, but the thought of 1 child per family is so ingrained into their society that few do have more than 1 child.

Before the economic crisis hit China, girls were becoming a status symbol, a sign of wealth. If you kept your daughter and could afford to pay the fees to have another, or you don't need an heir to take over the farm or family, you are considered wealthy.

A policy of if you are a single child and marry a single child you are allowed to have 2 children is in effect now. This will hopefully decrease the amount of children abandoned.

As to the age of children when adopted, there aren't many newborn due to paperwork. A child is usually found within the first month of birth. By the time the doctors examine the baby, run labs, tests, the orphanage director puts together the paperwork to submit to CCAA to make the child eligible for adoption, CCAA reviews the paperwork, makes a referral.... This takes months to do. Everyone knows governments aren't quick nor efficient.

china has a one child policy. decades ago they started a temporary program/one child policy and it stuck. because of that many can only have one child (there are some exceptions though depending on where you live or if you are a minority) and want it to be a boy. there are far fewer boys abandoned/up for adoption in china than girls. fees, forced abortions and even sterilization can all be done if the family has too many pregnancies. many abandon their girls because of all of this.

as for adoption at a few months... from talking to my friend who adopted from China abandoning is something very much looked down on and just not talked about. We had gotten on the subject because another family had gone back to China and made a huge poster about their child and where she was found. They were trying to find her mom. They got a pretty big lecture from people in China about doing that and how disrespectful that was in their country. I'd imagine that because of this feeling women/families wouldn't want to admit that they were going to give up their child by having a family lined up in another country just waiting.

My friends daughter was 9 months old when she was finally adopted. I'd imagine most aren't abandoned the day they are born, then the orphanage must go through a certain amount of legal proceedings to try to find the family and then legal proceedings to adopt which all take time to accomplish.

Yeah in China its the one child policy. Generally in Asian cultures boy is seen as an insurance for old age. Boy must take care and provide for elderly parents, but girl u loose to another family through marriage. Often this is what influences the choice to then abort girls, and as it can be nowadays detected in sonogram, girls get late-term aborted or abandoned more often.

because in asia, esp. china, the population is so huge that they have limited the amout of kids a family can have to 2. so when you have triplets or accidently get pregnant with your 3rd, you have to give them up. :( its really sad

Because they have limits on the number of children they can have. Boy babies are more important than girls. This is why mostly girls are available for adoption.

Worse part about Americans adopting chinese babies is most American families do not bother to teach them about their own culture.

TLC doesn't sound very accurate. The number of adoption from Korea has dropped from almost 2000 in the year 2000 to 1000 in 2008. Even the number from China are dropping as the chinese become wealthier and adoption becomes more accepted within china. For more accurate information you can check the US state department web site:
http://adoption.state.gov They show the trends in terms of number of children adopted from each country.

A lot of international adoption is because of poverty in one country. As a country becomes richer it has more resources to care for its children. Also as people become educated they tend to have fewer children in general. As for the age of babies coming to the US, this is because the home country tries to place them within the country before allowing them to be adopted domestically.

Is it the same in Singapore I don't think it is because my Auntie has like 5 children. Its sad that it happens there in China. Really sad actually. You should be able to keep your children. Maybe China should sell their land to smaller countries.

Such a deal China has

First they overpopulate the planet (one in five is Chinese)
Then they kill of our American Dogs
Then they poison their own dogs
Then They poison their own children with their milk formulas.....

They have too many kids, and get you to take them for them.

You raise them, then when they are older, they seek out their biological parents, who, had they had that second kid, would have lost their jobs, and housing.

Such a deal.

Per-birth matching is an American thing to do. 9Since you mentioned adopting from birth.)Most countries see it differently. They look at the family first and them other options if its needed.

Family preservation comes first is almost every country now. So that means a child in Korea if they can go back their family they should. Or if a Korean couple can adopt the child and they can stay in their own country its better for them. Inter-country adoption is the last option. (its shouldn't be ruled out because it has its place, just not 1st on the list.)
