Why do they make adoption so expensive?

No, there are NOT "all these babies in need of a good home", as others like to toss out there in response, otherwise the healthy white infant would be virtually free. Just where are all these little babies in need of a home then? Huh? Are they stockpiled somewhere in a baby warehouse? Are the hospitals overflowing with unwanted babies that women are abandoning after giving birth?

No.

On the contrary; the healthy white infant goes for a hefty price because there are so FEW of them available for adoption.

Short supply, huge demand = high price tag.

The kids who NEED homes are in foster care. Adopting through foster care is free. At least, in my state it is (I hear varying reports from others). Call your local DHS.

megan m - just because someone spends money on a child does not make them qualified parents. I am adopted and my parents were VERY abusive; physically, mentally, etc. As a result I spent 7 years on the streets (I was 13 when asked to leave). Don't be so naive. Money is not an indication of nurture. I am now 27 years old and I am married with 2 children. We are of lower middle class but our children are happy, healthy, well-educated and nurtured.

Fostering is not expensive, usually you get paid to do it. Those are the children who need good homes.

If you are speaking of babies - it's a matter of supply and demand, there are 90 waiting couples for every babe. That is why it's expensive; supply and demand.

Actually, I've been researching this very issue. I agree, some adoptions are astronomical! Nevertheless, private adoptions are expensive. Public adoptions through CPS are not. They are damn near free, actually. It just depends on if the family is open to adopting a child of another race or perhaps a child that isn't a newborn. There are also grants and loans available to help lessen the strain.

because they can you yu all pay it if it weren't done like this maybe you'd have a chance. i am adoptee and i am lucky i was adopted. but you knw what. its great to hear so many want to adopt i am sorry that it costs so much maybe going to congressman or something can bring this down to size.

agency fees, attorney fees, orphange fees, etc... I know what youmean my husband and I are waiting to adopt we live in CANADA so we are also going through family and children's services which does not cost you anything finacially to adopt, to us it just seems to be taking forever.

I know how you feel! We are starting the adoption process to bring home a child from Russia and I can't believe how expensive it is going to be!! But in the end, I guess it will all be worth it. We will be giving a home to a little boy or girl who would otherwise spend their lives in an orphanage and wind up on the streets, homeless. Any amount of money is worth saving the life of a child, right?

There are different types of adoption agencies. A lot depends on if the agency is public or private. Age also is an important factor. Infants are going to be more expensive to adopt and they are in higher demand. Also, as some people have said, there are lawyer fees, paper processing fees, counseling for the adoptive parents, etc.

Taking a person into your family is a big deal and the agencies know that. A lot of the agencies want to be sure that the child is going to go to a good, honest, loving family. There are so many people who have abused adopted children. This has made adoption difficult for a good reason.

The waiting list is also very long.

That's why a lot of people are opting to adopt overseas. That is also very expensive. Average $35K!!!!!

I can agree with you, that everyone charges more than they should. This is especially true, since the idea is to give a child a good home.

well they think that yopu should pay for them to show how much your willing to give for them! If you spend $2000 on a child you are not going to abuse it or naglect something that you went though so much to get, which means you really do love it! =)
