People pay because the people who do the adoptions tell them that they have to. And people who do the adoptions tell them they have to pay because the people who do the adoptions have expenses for lawyers, social workers, office staff and others and none of those people work for free. They also have to pay for insurance, office equipment, office space, documentation, advertising, record keeping, book keeping, auditing, licensing and again, none of that stuff is free.
As for the cost of adoptions, that varies depending upon the type of adoption you are doing. It can range from virtually free if you adopt through social services to $20k + for agency adoptions to up to $40k +/- for international adoptions. |

foster care adoption is practically free. so i'm unclear what you mean by "it costs a lot?"
now, if you are referring to newborn adoption, then yes, it will cost a lot. unfortunately, adoption has become a multi-billion dollar industry.
and the prospective adoptive parents, pay with their wallets...pregnant women with their hearts and bodies, and adoptees with their loss of identity. |

i know its so sad, children should be free to a good home ( i know sounds like an add for an animal) but there are so many families who would love a child and cant afford it. or if you can afford 20,000 i would rather use that for the child. we adopted 4 children through foster care. we became foster parents then the 4 we had came up for adoption and so we did it. in california anyway it cost 500.00 a child and once the adoption goes through they give you back 400.00 so total 100.00 a child. now the money we do have is going in their college fund. |

if you pay for adoption you are basically buying a child. i was adopted and i know my parents didnt pay no cent to get me, but maybe its different in the country where im from |

Why does it cost to adopt a child?
The official reason is lawyer fees, agency fees, country fees etc
The unofficial (and real) reason is because they (the people who adopt these children to couples) can, they feed on the parents want and need to have a child, and the birth mother's situation.
How much does it cost?
This varies from country to country and agency. I've seen anywhere from free (from foster care) to 100K+ (including travel).
I believe that yes fewer children get adopted because of the cost AND because of everything foster/adopted parents are required to go through (classes and etc). I mean i'm not poor but i (like so many others) don't have 20K+ to drop down for a agency. |

It all depends on which route you go. International adoptions are ridiculous. A friend of mine adopted her son from Guatemala and they paid 32k in the end to bring him home. Agencies are always expensive because youre paying the salaries of the employees. Private adoptions tend to be less expensive but that changes from birth mom to birth mom and what she expects of you financially. The same friend with the little boy adopted a little girl from Florida and the birth mom expected her rent, groceries, medical bills, cell phone ect all paid for by them. They spent roughly 15k between the birth mom and the lawyers for her. My Brother and SIL did a private adoption for my nephew (final tomorrow!!!!) and they only paid lawyer fees and home study fees. The birth mom wanted nothing from them. Just a home for her baby. |
