Why does Yahoo! Answers have an adoption section but not an abortion section?

A lot of times the abortion questions are posted in the pregnancy section and the people in that section typically take offense and criticize those who are seeking helpful information on a safe and legal means of terminating their pregnancy. Can you petition for a new section? I sympathize with both sides, the pro-lifers and the pro-choice crowd. I just feel bad for the women seeking advice who get slammed for their choice. But I also feel for the pregnant women who may feel uncomfortable with these sorts of questions in the pregnancy forum

I have petitioned numerous times to have an abortion category added to the pregnancy and parenting section. I have received just as many rejection emails from them. The are not considering it at this time or in the future they say. maybe if we get enough people to suggest it they will do something.

i agree... but unfortunately, i doubt that women would get support for an abortion decision. unfortunately, abortion is within the continuum of pregnancy, hence, why it's there.

there is however, a board on babycenter.com that focuses on termination for non-medical reasons.

It hasn't become a socially acceptable choice for women, yet.

Dear Tamara,

I have wondered this as well - how about a section on Reproductive Choices?

I would also like to know where the sections for Non-custodial Parenting, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and Foster Families are.

I agree completely. I've seen many people being critized for asking reasonable questions about abortion. While I know that abortion would never be something I would consider I know there are situations where it may seem like the only choice. While going through the agony of that choice it would be nice if there was somewhere for these women to post their questions and get some support and sensible advice.

i feel bad for people to and though ihave never aborted it does not mean its whats best for everyone people say adoption there are already a million children waiting to be adopted there is no way they will all be adopted.there should be a place for abortion but the prolifers who have never been faced with thise decision think that they have the right to criticize other people its like people criticizing medical marijuana who have never had to suffer the pain of cataracts

An abortion section would largely become similar to the LGBT section.....with a bunch of religious people condemning strangers and the occasional relevant question being reported or the questioner being demeaned/shamed.

There is also the issue of the numerous posts concerning abortion by means other than a practicing doctor....i.e. pills, falling down on purpose....etc. I think it would be a rarely used section--except for the uber religious and the people who want to abort by unethical means. Everyone else would--hopefully--know that there are better sites out there for finding out about abortion than an opinion forum.

They are going to get slammed for their questions no matter where you put them.

If there was a special section for abortion I think that people would just seek it out especially to slam the questioners and debate the politics/morals of the issue.
Are you looking for a pro-choice abortion section or something? A legality of abortion section? A 'where can I get an abortion in my area, no other comments please' section? You could set it up as one of those things, but you'd never get all those answers to stop.

I'm not sure how seperating them would help any of the problems you've mentioned, except maybe making some pregnant women uncomfortable. Its a controversial issue and people like to post rude/super strong statements about it.

I'd guess Yahoo will not ever do it anyways. Too controversial. You could try posting in the forum though, or emailing Yahoo Answers personnel.

Adoption has more complications than abortion.

Adoption is more multifaceted. There are complications with adopting in different countries, from different countries, the rights of birth parents, the rights of adopted children, and so on.

Abortion questions could be asked -and presumably answered satisfactorily- in the Women's Health section, and there is plenty of information offered at clinics.

Abortion -whatever you think of it- is a much more straightforward process in many ways.

EDIT: You know, there are other good reasons to not have a million sections for things. Someone suggested a Grandparents Raising Kids section...I'm not saying that they shouldn't have their questions answered, but for the sake of maximum usability, we can't give everyone their own category. What if, over on the Homeschooling section, we had sections for classical homeschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers, unit studiers, unschoolers, people who are thinking about homeschooling, people who used to be homeschooled, parents whose homeschooled children have grown up, people who like being homeschooled, and people who don't like being homeschooled? We would never be able to find anything or get anything done. Phrase your question so that people get the basics before they click, and hope for the best.

As for the getting slammed...welcome to the intertubes. It's what we do.

Abortion is not parenting, so it doesn't apply. It is in regards to pregnancy, however, so anyone who wishes to inquire about such an act is free to post there.

There are places for abortion questions... take it over to politics since abortion has nothing to do with parenting.
