Why is adoption so much more prevalent now then before?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why is adoption so much more prevalent now then before?

Adoption itself has grown in price, it is marketed now, etc. etc.

I often think it is a supply and demand issue, the more demand the higher "price' and the more people jump on the bandwagon to make more money.

But where is this demand coming from? Is it all marketing? Is adoption cool now? Or, are their more infertile people wanting (in their minds needing) a baby? And if so, why are their more infertile people?

I have no numbers (if someone does please send!) but I wonder what the rates are of people unable to conceive compared to the time before processed foods and couch potato lifestyles? Before chemicals were added to our tampons etc.? Has the fact that abortion is (thank god) legal and less people are having babies at younger ages?

Just thought I would throw out this question!

Infertility reasons:

--Pesticides and other environmental issues
--Postponing child bearing until the career or single days are over (Feminist Movement at fault?)
--Obesity/eating disorders screwing with hormones
--STDs

Less children available:

--Abortion
--Available birth control
--Less stigma in single parenting
--Social welfare programs
--Child support from reluctant fathers easier to get b/c of DNA tests.

In the USA, the government has been actively promoting adoption for many years.

Federal legislation, acts such as the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the Infant Adoption Awareness Act have enabled more people to adopt. These laws have also give money to agencies via government grants. The federal gov't is giving adoptive parents tax credits as well.

Adoption is more common today because people are putting off child-bearing and thus becoming infertile.

Many of us are old enough to recall when it was considered normal and healthy to bear children when we were were in our late teens and early twenties. The gov't is now telling young people that this is a "mistake".

This is absurd. This behavior(putting off child-bearing) is leading to mass infertility and may have other health consequences as well.

Humans are meant to bear children while young. Fertility drugs may lead to cancer and other problems, and the social consequences of late in life child-bearing and mass adoption are yet to be seen.

eta: I also agree with those who say that the hormones and preservatives in our food supply are contaminating our bodies. We are being poisoned. People are developing conditions from hormone exposure in the water supply, even from the birth control pills that end up in the rivers that supply our drinking water.
eta:adoption by strangers was rare before WW2. People feared 'bad blood'. Children were usually raised by kin, if the need arose. I recall knowing quite a few kids who were raised by guardians or "foster parents" who were relatives. I knew, in comparison, very few kids who were adopted by strangers while I was growing up myself.

The numbers of children today, who are being raised by strangers are growing, I would bet. Stranger-adoption is a late 20th century practice.

Part of it is federal incentives, but I don't think that's what you're getting at.

As for infertility rates, I don't know what those statistics are, but I do know that my own infertility was caused by chemicals in my environment. I went 18 years between children and never used birth control. It took a dramatic lifestyle change to reverse the infertility, however. No tap water, no factory farm meat, NO restaurant food, no foods with any chemical additives at all, no bleach or petroleum in my cleaning products.... It was a major lifestyle change. I did it for my own health. I hadn't given a second thought to having children as a result of it. You could have knocked me over with a feather when it happened. It was totally unexpected.

People wait too long to have babies. There's nothing wrong with having children when you are young, as nature intended.

There have always been orphaned children and couples wanting to adopt them. Of course there were not always outrageous prices involved in doing so. Since the legalization of abortion and the okay-ness of single parenting, there are probably a lot less children put up for adoption than in days long ago.

Yesterday I read in the newspaper that using plastic baby bottles has been linked to several problems such as infertility. People are now switching back to glass bottles to prevent their children from lower I.Q.'s and such. Maybe that is why I am so fertile. I was breastfed.

Commodification of children and the increase of westerners becoming infertile.

The same could be said for IVF or buying eggs and/or renting wombs.....the increase in infertility is driving up business.

People are more open to it now. Marketing helps both ends come together for the benefit of the child.

Maybe God has made more people infertile so they will adopt the neglected children of the world... I dunno.
